Anyone here make the transition from HODOR to MAESTER? (sry)

Considering reading the books. Googled doing this and reading up in forums people generally said it's fine.
I'm still a bit concerned it would take a good deal of the suspense out of TV series though. The main reason for taking the jump is that I know sooner or later some dillhole is going to spoil a season(s) for me.
I think there are at least 4 more seasons and I don't think I'm going to make it the next 4 years without getting spoiled. YouTube comments are frightening.
tl;dr Did it make the episodes less entertaining if you read the books after you started watching the tv show?

IMO the episodes became more entertaining after I read the books...FWIW I was a Hodor during the first 2 seasons and read the books last year during Season 3.

This is absolutely true. I watched the first three episodes of season 1, then stopped watching until I could read all of book one. Then during the offseason I read the other four. It makes the show so much more entertaining because now you know what the characters are thinking. It's an extra layer of immersion.

I remember when you were a Hodor. It makes me do a double take sometimes.

I read Storm of Swords after watching seasons 1 and 2, then went back and read AGOT and ACOK. Then I read AFFC and ADWD.
If I were you, I'd wait until season 4 wraps up then just read all the books.
If anything, reading the books before watching the show enhances my viewing, because I have all the background info I need and can help explain plot elements to my Hodor friends without spoiling anything for them.
books 1 and 3 are by far the best in the series. 4 and 5 are not great but still good

I read Game of Thrones after episode 1 of the first season. Finished Feast before the 6th episode. Makes the show better IMO. You get a better understanding this way.

We've done research on this transition. The trick is isolating the precise area of the hippocampus that holds ASOIAF knowledge so you don't disrupt the subjects' other memories. Unfortunately, quite a few Reeks were created in the process.

This is what I wanted to hear.

Yep, this close to the finale I will def wait. Make the off-season go a little faster.

These replies makes for an easy decision.
Already feeling sorry for all you HORDOR4LYPHs. You will never know the feeling of being a MAESTER. I will have experienced both worlds.

A frontal lobotomy could literally make you a hodor i suppose

I was a hodor for the first season, a middle grounder for the second, and a maester by the third. Up until this season, the series was much more exciting as a hodor. However, it is worth it being a maester because the books are such immersive and wonderful reads.

I read the first book after season 1, the second book after season 2 and I am currently reading the third book. I try to not read further than where the show is currently at. That way I never know what will happen next on the tv show.

After the first season I was looking at a couple of 12+ hour flights, so I started reading the books. Read the 2nd book before the 2nd season, read Storm of Swords before last season. Read the last two books after the Red Wedding. It has enhanced by viewing pleasure 10 fold.
