My choices are Hillary Clinton 1st. Others Col. Alan West, one of the Simpson-Bowles team, or Dr. Ben Carson.

Doesn't matter really.

The bottom line is, the problem is that our govt isn't giving the VA the resources to accomplish the goals the government is then mandating they accomplish. That's what led to people gaming the system in the first place. They went into self-preservation mode.

To be completely honest the figurehead in charge is going to have go deep into the woods to fix the problem. Same with IRS, EPA and every other bureaucratic agency.

Anyone that can issue a benefits card to vets to get treatment today at the facility of their choice.

It's going to be impossible to run off a lot of them do to Union contract protections I would bet. Someone said there's hundreds of lawyers alone working at the VA.

Way, way, way overqualified!

We need an incompetent lawyer like Sebelius, or an incompetent doctor like Vivek Murthy.

A new secretary is likely to do nothing.

Here is my suggestion. Dissolve The Veterans Affairs and give their budget, people and infrastructure to each of the three military departments. Each service would be responsible for their veterans.

It would be interesting to see how each service treats and cares for their veterans. Ultimately they would want to be successful as this would affect recruiting and retention.

Why is there a separate VA bureaucracy? Seems like an overcomplicated government solution to a problem that could've been solved cheaper and better by not-government or at the very least, the military.

This.

Why have the VA, Medicaid AND Medicare (and any other myriad governmental health care institutions) as seperate entities?

I'll do it - but I need carte blanche - heads are going to roll from Ball to D.C. to Phoenix.

Basically, I need a 3-year guarantee of non-interference and I'll fix the VA so good, you'll never know it was broken in the first place.

What about Coasties? Commissioned Corps of the USPHS and NOAA? (Everybody forgets about them, but they're veterans, too.)

Just have the Navy cover all them, I suppose...

It never ceases to amaze me how almost all government agencies (particularly those involved in healthcare) have leadership made up of political ticket punchers, when what is needed is professional leadership.

You know, people who have made a living running hospitals and stuff like that.

I thought Navy as well. I think the Navy and Air Force would have the best systems off the bat.

frick that!! That's the last thing we need. They don't give a single shite about healthCARE. Need accountability at all levels. Give vets choice of provider. Let them seek care outside of VA. Pay VA doctors better. Make them compete for patients. The VA gets the bottom of the barrel docs and nurses for the most part. Not to say there aren't some good ones, but most are shite. Make/allow these shitty VA satellite clinics deliver care. When I was a resident, I had to do clinic at one. All we could do was refill meds and treat the most basic shite. Anything else had to be referred to Little Rock...2 hours away. Often for a skin CA the wait was a year. It's bullshite. They take in TONS of revenue and don't do jack shite!!! Don't get me started on the shitass hospitals and EMR.

And!!!!! Me and another student had to clean a vet with no legs one morning after he had soiled himself. He said he called and called and no one came. Finally, he couldn't hold it. He was embarrassed as the other student was an attractive female. In tears, he told us he had been sitting in it for about 6 hours. We told the charge nurse and she just said "not her problem". We changed and cleaned him, although there was an entire floor of nurses paid to do so, but wouldn't. We tried our best to help him keep some pride and thanked him for his service. He apologized profusely, but we assured him it was our honor and duty, not to mention a natural process. I wanted to fricking kill those chain smoking fat arse POS bitches working that floor. No actions were ever taken, and when they did do it themselves they cursed the vets and treated them with no respect or dignity. I'm telling you the mfing VA is hell on earth.
