For example, let's say you have an elderly mother-in-law who you are not a big fan of and neither is your spouse. Once said in-law passes away, can you simply not talk to the nursing home or handle burial arrangements? Perhaps you don't want to take one last frick you from her in having to pay for the service, or you can insert your own reason.

What happens if you just abandon them and don't respond to the home or doctor when they call to inform of their passing?

Your spouse is evil and I wouldn't trust her. No one can hate their own mom that much. You can choose not to be around them, but at least respect them enough to take care of them in death. This shouldn't need to be said.

Donate the body to science...that doesn't cost anything I think.

That is tough. Ignore and they cremate her. But a last frick you nonetheless.

However, if she is buried, you can piss on her grave.

No, she was/is paying bills until money ran out then Medicare kicked in.

when you sign them up and enter them in the nursing home, you are also agreeing to not leave their corpse there after they dead

She signed herself up. She was and still is of sound mind (medically speaking). All documents etc were handled by her.

Dude, I was just wondering about this. I could never actually do that.

On that note, does anyone know the actual answer?

then she needs to have a plan in place in the event she dies. Does she not have a will in place spelling out what she wants done with her body after she dies?

Negative. Has not.

But you should pre-pay your own services whether in a home or not. If in a home, the medicare just kicks in that much quicker and you get a free funeral essentially and your kids don't have the cost. If not in a home, your estate doesn't get taxed for those funds. Its smart to do if you have the $ to do it.

You're not getting it. My sick hypothetical wouldn't care about her wishes. Unless you're asking if the nursing home would carry out her wishes? (within reason)

Lets just say its a single elderly person, no family no money no next of kin, no will. What happens when they pass away?

No estate to speak of. Retired in their 40's and lived into their 80's. Pretty much all gone.
