Getting my wife a vehicle today. We have narrowed it down between a 2013 Ford Edge Limited and a 2013 Ford Explorer Limited.

The Explorer is about 5k more and really the only difference is the 3rd row seating. I am trying to convince her that the 3rd row will likely never get used.

However, we both like the looks of the Explorer more.

Thoughts?

So technically it's not just the 3rd row seating that you'll be paying more for. Go for the Explorer

How many kids you got? That's kind of the key variable in this here equation, goofball.

There is a bit more elbow room in the explorer too. Whenever we go out with a group we take ours because it seats 7. Either kids or little females end up in the way back though.

It depends on your needs.

I've been in five seat vehicles for a decade, (Avalanches and now a new Jeep GC), twice a year I need a sixth or seventh seat and don't have it but it's so infrequent it's not a big deal.

If your kids a little, you may use the third row. We have a 2003 Mountaineer and have not used the third row seat in about 6 years, since our youngest was about 6.

If you have kids the 3rd row will be a godsend. One example is when you're going somewhere and they want to bring a friend or friends. Or if your wife is like mine and takes part in school car pool where she and a couple of her close friends rotate taking their kids to and from school.

FWIW, my wife drives a Tahoe.

Only you can decide that

Quite a bit more storage on the Explorer than the Edge. So the question might be how often you travel or haul things as that extra space might be beneficial.

We are looking at an Explorer right now as well and the wife currently drives a Murano. We won't use the 3rd row but maybe once a year but there are plenty of time when we travel and use her car so the extra cargo area will be nice.

Just curious as to what other vehicles you looked at? We are looking at a Highlander, Pilot, and Pathfinder as well. Still trying to decide which one to go with.

Drop the extra coin and find a 4th row. You will surely use it at some point.

I rarely use the third row in my Tahoe, but it has been used on several occasions and it was really nice to be able to fit everyone in one vehicle. My mom bought the Edge. I was actually given one as a rental when I bought my Tahoe, because it wouldn't be ready until the next day. I suggested it to her when she was ready to buy. It's got a lot of room and I liked the drive height. I actually like the look better than the newer Explorers as well.

1 kid on the way. There will be more. If she has it her way, many more.

honest question is the edge on a car base?
Is the explorer on a truck base?

those could be other huge differences

We have looked at some of the smaller SUV/crossovers. Nissan Rouge, Mazda CX-5 and CX-9, 4Runner, and the Jeep GC.

Both those Fords are way more bang for our buck at the moment.

The Explorer Limited is a 2013 with 30k miles for 28k. Has all the options.

Yeah if you're going to have more than 1 kid, you'll want that 3rd row.

Also depends on the size of the 3rd row. We got one for our vehicle, but it's really only good for 10 yr olds or younger. We rarely use it.

Is it actually easy to get to you? Or are you gonna have to fold down the second row every time just to get to it? They seem like a waste of room to me a pain in the arse to get to. Not to mention they're usually tiny little seats

I think both are on variants of a unibody car frame. The Edge is based off of the Taurus and the Explorere uses the same frame as the Flex and Lincoln MKZ.

What is your other vehicle?

It's not the kids that take up a lot of room, it's all the crap you have to bring with them
