Really eerie watching search and rescue for a missing hiker.

She could literally be within eyesight of the downtown area and cruise ship docks, most likely deceased. Been missing since Friday.

Strange feeling watching this happen, knowing the person they are trying to recover. We hiked one of the trails Monday, and helped look in some of the basin area.
This coast guard chopper is equipped with FLIR thermal imaging systems and they've been using it at night. This is the area they are searching.
You can access these trails from downtown. I see people off the cruise ships hiking on them sometimes.

Come to find out an older gentleman slid about 500 feet off the hogsback into a fumarole. He had several broken bones and had to get air lifted out. Very strange feeling to be around that.

Was she in poor health? What is more probable an accident or some type of medical issue? Bear or moose?

She's a member of the alpine team, a mountain runner and avid hiker. Knows those mountains as well as anyone. She's not lost. I doubt it's bear related though there's plenty of bears on the mountains. Probably fell, chances are she will not be found. There are several missing hikers on those mountains around downtown who have never been found so it's not uncommon.
There are about 5 main trails in that area but the backcountry is rugged as hell, still a lot of snow over 2,000 ft. Her car is still at one of the trail heads. We drove past it before hiking up to Granite Creek Basin on Monday. Hikers die or go missing every year in town, so it's not unusual. For someone of her experience it's a bit odd. One died a month ago on another trail.

Maybe what's so unsettling about it is that if something can happen to someone like her, it could happen to anyone.
I get the feeling of invincibility sometimes out there and she's far more experienced than I.

that's exactly it Roger... I never feel invincible but I sure as hell feel very confident most times.

The area you circled is one little drainage in a really big world.
And when you say "hiking", I gather it is a bit more than a stroll in the woods.

Yeah, it's the Gold Creek area.s Silverbow Basin. There's roughly 4,000 vertical rise in that small area, so it;s really steep

Depends where you go. Mt. Juneau is rough, Mt Roberts not so bad. You can hike the ridges back to the Icefield, but I doubt she would have done it by herself
They're focusing on an area we covered Monday. Looking at some of the side trails. Lots of old mining tunnels and one glory hole, which was an open pit mining area 100 years ago.

Search called off. Really weird situation.
She's the second physical therapist to go hiking and not come home in the past month. The last one was found dead on the trail.
Always wear bright clothing, carry basic survival gear even if it's a day hike.
