Reminder of why I ALWAYS carry a pocket knife
Posted by bapple on 5/28/14 at 5:37 pm20
Of course most of you reading the thread title wonder why I didn't say pistol. Well for the most part I have a pistol on me, but if I am drinking, working, or at someone's home, I usually don't have a pistol on me.
I stepped out of my truck at a friend's house yesterday. I heard some barking and there were two dogs across the street. I didn't think anything of it and just walked normally to the door. I hear footsteps and look behind me and one of the dogs is within about 10 feet of me with his teeth out, drooling, and all the hair on his back was up. I pulled out my benchmade and slowly backed towards the door. The only reason I didn't have a pistol on me was because 1. I was going into my friends house ONLY from the driveway and 2. I was wearing athletic shorts.
This is a reminder that things can happen very quickly. This all happened in a span of about 10-15 seconds. Always keep your head on a swivel, even for the most mundane and repetitive tasks that you always do.

Better than nothing, but I imagine slicing and dicing with an attacking dog would end badly for both.
Topic drift: What is the best way to fight with a knife? I once heard to hold it in your fist and just start punching normally.

Please make a 18 minute video of why every man should carry a knife. I might watch

Depends on fighting style, opponent, and blade.

What happened? You kill him? Slice his jugular, joog him with your knife? Cause your story kinda sounds like a dog barked at you.

I'm gonna just assume it was a nasty pitbull
I didn't even want to say the breeds to see if someone would guess it but one dog was a brown pitbull and the other was a husky or German Sheppard. His hair was white and grey so I'm not 100% sure. But what I do know is they may have wanted to eat my arse.

Well if either dog wanted to spill blood, I imagine a puncture to the throat/face/neck/chest would give me a better fighting chance then if all I could do is try to punch it and gouge it's eyes out.

That's a good question. This situation definitely makes me feel like I should try to get some information about it or train with it.
All I know is a Benchmade sure feels damn good in your hand. I had the blade pointing away from me with my index finger in that groove that they place so perfectly.

I wouldn't say raised hair on the back, a drooling mouth, teeth all out, and an aggressive posture 10 feet away from me is simply being "barked at."
EDIT: Forgot to say that I viciously knocked on my friend's door with my back to the door to keep my eye on the dogs. He thought I was joking and opened the door slowly for me. They were about 10-15 feet away from me.

My reminder stories always have me needing to cut something.
That's the majority of the use that my knife gets.

I just generally always have one on me. It's 95% of the time used for utility but if I have to slash a dog to keep it from slashing me I would do it.
