Taking a look at the 2014 small forward free agents, there's not a lot of hope for the Pels to improve at the SF, unless they get Deng. He's the only one of the bunch who's:
a) unrestricted
b) under 30
c) never played for NOLA
d) been an all star and
e) got some tread left on the tires.

Thibadeau did wear him out a bit in Chicago playing the dude 47.9 min/game there for a while and he wasn't stellar last year on the Cavs, when he obviously didn't care and took nights off bc that team was garbage. I think the Pelicans and NOLA would be the refreshing restart/second act to his career that he needs. Plus he'd make the Pelicans really good on paper. Could you imagine a small ball lineup with Holiday-Evans-Deng-Anderson-Davis? :boner:

We'd have to clear out some space to make that happen.

That's actually a big concern with Deng. He's carried a heavy load in Chicago the past few years. He also is not a good shooter, so you have to wonder how well he mixes with Tyreke. On top of that, I'd expect him to get at least $10 million if not more, so the Pelicans really don't have a way to acquire him unless Cleveland is willing to S&T him for Gordon.

It's really a shame that this is a prerequisite for a FA to play for Monty.

I'm curious as to how much he narrows his possible landing spots.

The culture shock of the locker room in Cleveland, as opposed to the professional atmosphere with the Bulls, weighed heavily on him. He'd probably insist on going somewhere that had a similar situation to the one Thibodeau had going in Chicago.

I figure he may take a pay cut to go play for a team like the Thunder, though obviously not in front of Durant, than take what would be offered to go to more questionable situations.

Doubt that he is a realistic option. I would think we would be looking at players like Tucker, Hamilton, Granger, MWilliams or WJohnson type. Otherwise, I could see some sort of trade for Webster.

We don't have the money to go after Deng.

I think we are stuck looking at guys like Granger, M. Williams.

What does the board think about going with an older guy like Paul Pierce, Caron Butler or Richard Jefferson? They would probably be back ups for title contending teams, but could be starters for us.

Also, what does the board think of CJ Miles, Francisco Garcia and Douglas-Roberts?

I think he turned down something like 3 yrs / 30mil from Chicago. We certainly can't give him more than that, and I don't see a reason he'd take less to play here. Even if we had the type of money he's looking for, would you really want to pay a guy who can't shoot 9-10mil a year when he is 32 or 33 years old? I don't see his game aging all that well, especially with the insane amount of minutes he has played in Chicago.

Sounds like another bad contract to an aging player. Seems like the Hornets/Pels have given those out once or twice

pass on all 3.

And aging? He's the same age as Lebron. He's an older vet but he's like 6 years younger that everyone listed above. He'd be a great fit in Miami now that I think of it...

He's not as athletically gifted as LeBron, so you have to take that into consideration.

Paul Pierce is at the chase a ring or retire stage of his career. I actually like Richard Jefferson as a 1 year stop gap 3 and D SF if we can't find a younger guy for the position.

I want Loul Deng, but then I remember that time the Hornets added James Posey to a young stud filled roster, and I'm like never mind.

Deng is a much better player though

Yeah, Deng would be more like David West to the Pacers than James Posey to the Hornets. I've been a proponent of Deng for a while, but now I question his fit if Tyreke is a long term piece because Deng is not a good shooter. His percentage is very good at the rim, 63.8% for his career, but his next best range is the "Dumb Zone" long mid range shot which he shot at 41% last year. He's certainly much better than Aminu, but he's not the spacer we're looking for, especially at the price he'd command.

Oh Deng is a way better player. But I remember Posey being pretty good that first year we got him and then falling off the Titanic in production. My fear is that Deng turns out to be an Andre Iguodala type, not David West. Still good but mehhhh when you look at the price tag. You need a superb amount of athleticism to play SF in this league, you can get by without it at PF. I'd rather take a look at Tony Snell (Trade) and Richard Jefferson(FA). Those would be my top two priorities if I was Demps.

No concern there. He's capable enough and Anderson (if returns to form) provides a sharp shooter along with Jrue being pretty good.

Yep. There's no way to get Deng here.

Deng is way better than Posey every was.

I think any of those guys would be an upgrade. But yeah, they would really only be a stop gap.

I'm interested to see if he goes somewhere that is a contender where his minutes are cut or if he goes to a team who will let him be a starter and play starter minutes.

Not sure which he will want.

You can't convince me Deng would make the Pelicans worse

I want WJ to man the 3 for us. He's basically what we hoped AFA would be

He's athletic, can guard 3 or 4 positions, can knock down the 3, still fairly young. He could be had for a reasonable amount and you may get lucky and everything may "click" for him. Even if he doesn't get any better, you still get a solid, athletic 3 you can play 30 minutes a night
