Just heard about this thing. It sounds pretty legit from the reviews I've read. Anyone have one or familiar with one?

It also sounds like it should be illegal since you're able to get newly released movies and all.

this is why I thought it would be illegal

There were a shite ton of movies on there and I'm sure there are more than just that one available.

It was the G-Box Midnight MX2.

How would you get first-run movies? The device is just an Android PC running XBMC. If you can get them there, you can get them on any PC.

I don't have a clue. I just overheard a convo some coworkers were having about it and was curious about it. Stumbled upon one and saw Godzilla so I thought it might be something.

Is it worth the money? I was just looking for some details or first-hand reviews from anyone that had one or was familiar with one.

Your co-workers probably saw a pirated copy of it that somebody had on a flash drive and played back through the G-Box. The G-Box had nothing to do with access to the film itself. It could as easily have been played back on a Roku or an Amazon Fire TV, both of which would be better choices, particularly if you want HD playback. You can read the reviews HERE.

Matricom MX2 box, aka, any generic AML8726-MX (Amlogic) box. I set one up for a friend. Got it running a custom linux build that can run XBMC at true 1080p instead of the Android rom that can only run a 720p build of XBMC.

I'm currently using an Asus Chromebox running Openelec as my XBMC/HTPC box.

there's nothing illegal about that box or running XBMC, but there are add-ons you can install (program extensions) that can interface with streaming websites (like Primewire or Icefilms) same as you could from your PC, and there's where the legality comes into question.

Pre-release screening dvds are put on torrent sites all the time. Some are for award screenings and have an advisory every 20 minutes or so. It's the full movie too.

I have a G Box and a roku. I use the G Box to find things not available from other places. There are actually a few different devices designed if run XBMC.
