So this year has been the year that defensive shifts have just blown up. You are seeing extreme shifts leaving only one infielder on one side of the diamond. So in situations like this, why don't they just bunt? No way in hell the SS could get to that ball, no matter who's at bat.

A couple of players have experimented with bunting, I think Papi has done it a couple of times. I'd have to imagine the power hitters are arguing they want HRs, not bunts.

Because they aren't paying David Ortiz to hit singles

I think the general consensus is that you're only really seeing the shift for power hitters that pull constantly, so if that person bunts and beats the shift who cares...they didn't just crush a HR because the bat was essentially taken out of their hands

I could be horribly wrong

I've been beating the "bunt to beat the shift" drum since they started this shift crap. It's a no brainier.

Anthony Rizzo does. He did it successfully twice in one game this season.

If he gets on base at a .500 clip when this happens I bet, they don't complain.

So maybe they should fine him when he hits a single that goes off the Green Monster.

My point is a single is a single, rather it's a rope, or a dribbler up the 3rd base line to beat the shift.

With the way they are pitching to Pedey, there is almost zero pop in that lineup. If they need power, it's coming from him, Xander, or placeholder.

Meh. When you square to bunt, you are giving up on the opportunity to crush a pitch. On a wall ball single, you can argue he could have hit it a little different and HR!

Now it's going to take 2 or 3 more hits in the inning for him to score. His job is to drive the ball in the gaps and hit it out the park.

Sort of. I'd say his job is getting on base.

Apparently you haven't seen the 6-9 hitters the Red Sox are trotting out this year

Guaranteed to get them to stop shifting.

Looks like a shot to the gap in the box score.

That's pretty hard to do, but if you could get that kind of distance on a regular basis, it could be a helluva weapon against the shift.

Well for one that was dumb for them to shift against Cano. Ortiz isn't stretching that into a double

Bunting major league pitching isn't easy. Plus sluggers are typically some of the worst bunters.

The players involved look to be around Bobby V's time.

Rizzo for the Cubs has taken advantage of the shift a couple times this season.
