Cobb Commissioners voted unanimously, 5-0, on the operating agreement that will bound the county to borrow up to $397 million to build the Atlanta Braves a new stadium scheduled to open in 2017.

Commissioners also approved several other aspects of the deal that will keep the Braves in the new stadium for 30 years.

Public comment tonight was dominated by stadium supporters, angering those who showed up at tonight’s meeting to protest parts of the deal and how it was conducted. They were not granted a chance to speak.

Tonight’s vote culminates months of negotiations between county and team officials, which followed commission approval of a preliminary agreement in November.

Any speculation on the corresponding move? Hopefully no one is going on the DL.

In other news there was a bear sighted down the street from me. I hope bear control is also a part of this deal.

The Braves had to call this kid up.

Uggla has stunk up the joint again. Braves are still trying to figure out a way to get rid of him.

Pastornicky and Pena have had their chances to take over at 2B but neither one has capatalized.

All La Stella has to do is hit .225-.250 and the job is his!

I certainly hope he hits better than .225-.250. His defense isn't supposed to be very good and he doesn't have much power.

Braves optioned Pastornicky back to Triple A.

True to form, the #Braves kept the La Stella promotion a secret so that Dan Uggla couldn't object to it.

Fangraphs Article on Tommy La Stella

This article is more of a fantasy-based article, but it still gives good analysis.

quote:

The best news for La Stella is that he’s not likely to bust, at least when seen through the perspective of his walk and strikeout rates in the minor leagues. Chris St. John’s work on the subject suggests that his bust rate is below 40% based on the fact that La Stella walked 12.6% of the time in Triple-A and struck out only 7.1% of the time.

If you follow this line of reasoning, you’re happy to hear that his coaches love his gritty approach at the plate and laud his two-strike adjustments. You might interested to know that La Stella was one of six players to walk more than he struck out in the International League this year, and that he was the only one of the six that was 25 or younger. Obviously, this man can control the plate.

On the other hand, this is not a prospect with pedigree. Given that he was never ranked in the top 100 by Baseball America (he also didn’t make Marc Hulet’s top 100), La Stella should see a bust rate north of 70%.

And if you’re focusing on this lack of pedigree and the higher bust rate, you’re thinking about defense to some extent. Even the appreciative Baseball America post above includes a section in which La Stella has to tackle the things he has to work on defensively. There are questions about his ability to stick at second base at least. His bat probably doesn’t fit anywhere lower on the defensive spectrum, so there you’d have a bust.

quote:

We know that Tommy La Stella has two thirds of what he needs in order to show a good batting average. But if you want to know his downside, look at Marco Scutaro. Scutaro is elite when it comes to contact, has good plate discipline, but his lack of power has kept his career batting average under .280.

Too bad Simmons is hurt. It would have been the perfect opportunity to get CJ out of the field and have him DH while Pena plays third.

I'm in Boston tonight for work and will be going to the game. Can't wait to watch La-La-La Stella.
