I have a cousin in college that lives with us and is trying to get by. She drives an 01 Taurus that frequents my shop often. Last week she called and was broke down on the side of the road. The motor was running fine but would only rev up when she applied gas like it was in park, no matter what gear she was in. The transmission had been working fine with no slipping or catching. I also noticed a burnt smell when I got there and was looking at it. I pulled her home and did a little searching because it wasn't the typical transmission symptoms and found that was a common problem and it has me thinking it's elecrical of sorts. Someone told me they have a "black box that controls the transmission that can go out and cause this". That makes sense but I can't find what it is called or where it is located. I'm hoping it isn't in the transmission because it will be a mother to get out but wanted to see if any of you knew more about this or could give me some starting points. TIA

sounds like what happened to my 92 dodge dakota. it was a clogged catalytic converter. It was choking the engine. It idle and rev'ed when in neutral/park but couldn't handle it when a load was put on it by putting it in gear.

Fords are known for their little black box relays going out.

look on the fire wall of the vehicle and you will see a series of black squares. get the manual and figure out which is which. Or go to autozone find the correct book and use that to diagnose the issue.

Issue sounds like clutch or electronic control of clutch/tranny.

I think thats it. When I google I keep coming up with different things such as control module and control solenoid and can't get a proper name for it. I will try to get an electircal diagram on the transmission I guess.

from another site:

But the interesting thing was I found a little known blog that said, disconnect the battery (clear the codes) and the transmission would still kick into gear, even when the transmission fluid was low. Evidently the torque converter, if it doesn't catch too well or not at all, sends a message somewhere to not try at all. Clearing the code, started it searching again. Too often, most of the mechanic's kept saying the transmission needed complete rebuilding. In this case, this was not needed

and

I have a 2004 Ford Taurus, and the transmission did the same as yours. There was no gears that would engage, forward or reverse. I looked on the Internet to find what the problem was, and found most was saying it was the torque converter. And most said it would cost around $1800 to replace it. They also suggested that the torque converter being replaced should be bought at Autozone because it is made with better splines for the pump shaft. The part is made in Tennessee by a company called Dacco. I bought one for my car for $174.99 Found a guy to put it in for $100 My total cost was around $350.

I know I once had a mechanic tell me to reset 12 volt systems disconnect the battery and tap the battery cables together and then re attach them correctly.

Good luck.

Great man thanks, it's a starting place. For some reason I was having a lot of difficulty with where to start. I found out our local u pull it has two in the same model so that may save her some money too. Thanks

Notorious for the converter stopping up i would check that. They pin the converter right out of the motor. If its collapsed it wont let any exhaust through.

Motor runs fine no matter what gear you shift it into. The problem is, the motor just revs when you gas it, the car doesn't move, like it always thinks it's in park or neutral.

yep not the cat converter.

Put car on jack stands and shift gears. try to rotate the drive wheels (rear wheel drive?)

if they freely spin in all it is not shifting.

if they change and rotate forward (car not running but in forward gear, and backward car not running but in reverse) then it is shifting correctly but for some reason the power is not getting from motor to tranny.

if tires are always free spinning regardless of gear then either it is not shifting correctly or it is shifting but connection between tranny and wheels has a problem.

Had that happen to a 98 Taurus and it was the transmission. 2 estimates of $3,500 to rebuild, car had 160k miles, just bought an F150 instead. It was for my son, at least we got his first yr and 1/2 out of the way on an old car.

Good luck!!

I will try that. Found some good info here on the correct transmission. Seems to be very poor with quite a few problems and a high failure rate a low miles. Going to go through the Electronic controls and see what I can find. Will start out with the battery cables. Seems to the first right move. Thanks for suggestions BP

sounds like one of the drums or planetary is busted in it.
get someone to hook up a good scanner and see if it is telling the transmission to go in gear.
if it says activating first gear selenoid then it is the transmission.
if it doesn't activate the first gear selenoid it is electrical.

I didn't get a chance to do anything yesterday since rain never let up when I was home and it's not parked in my shop. Im sure I can get someone I know to do that, I was gun shy to take it anywhere because I know nothing about transmissions but that is exactly what I needed to know. Thanks GM

typically, when you put an automatic transmission in drive from the park position at idle, you can feel it go into gear (i.e. it tries to move forward and the engine speed drops a bit)....can you tell if that is happening?....

if not, I will guess that there is a linkage problem and the thing is not going into drive when you move the shifter....

The speed sensor is under the exhaust manifold, but it would have it in 1st if it failed (like mine did).

But basically Taurus transmissions are shite.
