Verizon XLTE

Just saw a commercial for Verizon XLTE and checked out their website. Seems like it's just an upgrade to their 4G LTE service. So my question is, are all previous 4G LTE phones going to experience the upgrade, or is the LTE chip in the current line-up an upgrade over LTE chips from 2 years ago?

It's merely a marketing gimmick. It's LTE on the AWS spectrum, which T-mobile has had for years.

AWS spectrum
Where is that in relation to the old tv broadcast range?

So does it use the same radio chip? Will an iphone5 get XLTE? I would tend to doubt it but I have no idea.

No, it's only a few specific phones.

Nearly all of the devices Verizon Wireless sells, including the newest DROID devices, Samsung Galaxy S4, S5 and Note 3, and the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, are XLTE Ready when purchased. Today, more than 35 percent of all devices operating on the Verizon Wireless network can take direct advantage of the added capacity that AWS provides.
Blackberry Q10 and Z30 included!

Xlte is just LTE on the AWS spectrum as said before, in addition to the LTE on the original spectrum, which will add more bandwith.
It's a good thing.

I have a Droid 4. I wasn't sure if they were simply not listing it because it is over 2 years old, or if there was a difference in the chip. Oh well, still haven't had anything that has made me want to upgrade yet. My contract has been up for a few months, but don't really want to give up my unlimited data plan.

I thinks its any phone that is LTE band 4 compatible.
Pretty fast speeds on this band. T-Mobile

For the moment, I don't do anything on my phone that merits speeds that fast. As long as I get standard LTE, I am golden

I tether multiple devices all the time.

My test results were:
Ping: 76
Down: 11.58
Up: 2.68
Work wifi had slower down:
Ping: 28
Down: 8.45
Up: 6.36
Looks like I should stop connecting to my work wifi since I have unlimited data.
