My child will start LSU this fall and live in dorm. What are your tech recommendation must haves and what can we get with the 529savings money? Just assume general studies to start.

For productivity programs and movie watching, pretty much anything you buy will do.

do students now bring laptops/tablets to class? I would imagine a surface pro would be sweet in class.

The overwhelming majority of students use laptops in class, although tablets are still somewhat of a rarity.

While I was there LSU gave a student discount through dell, hp, apple, ibm, etc... Just something to keep in mind

You can pick up a decent Dell Inspiron for around $500. If the student already has tv that can be used as a monitor I would use that instead of spending the extra 100-200 for a monitor and use that money to extend the 90-day warranty to 2 years.
Also. while laptops are more mobile (they can take them to class and type notes), they are more expensive (less power for more cost).
Finally, most schools have some sort of deal worked out with software companies, so don't spend any extra cash on things like Office or Norton's A/V until you (or the student) speaks with the school's IT staff to see what kind of deals they can get (nothing like getting Office for free, eh?). Also, Microsoft Security Essentials (their anti-virus package) is free so someone on a budget can save money there as well.

lots of them have some seriously discounted student gear with a legit student id/transcript. That goes for software too.

I believe Dell is tossing in a tablet (unsure of which) to anyone with a .edu address buying a qualifying laptop for the foreseeable future. Something to consider. Lots of "grad" deals direct from manufacturers right now.

Lenova has some really cheap small laptop with really good battery life. Small screen is the tradeoff but will serve them well in college. highly mobile, light and won't chew much space on a table top for class.

Unless the keyboard has greatly improved, I would not recommend this option. We have a Surface RT at work, and the attached keyboard is awful. While it is better than typing on a screen because it has tactile response, it feels less responsive than any other keyboard type. Even the built in mouse pad is very vague in response.
Just look for a laptop that has 4GB of RAM or better, with at least an i5 Pentium Processor. Hard drive space really isn't that important these days with cloud options as well as cheap portable drives. I would just recommend something with a solid state drive because of the increased speed and reliability.

If the roommate is bringing a TV, let them. Figure that out early. As for computers, almost everyone uses laptops. Tablets are a bitch to deal with in class. That's about it, honestly. You really don't need much.
Stock their room with computer paper because the dorms will have a printer in their computer lab (another plus should he/she need it). If he or she rushes, there will always be a printer in their sorority/fraternity house as well. I believe most still have an actual computer lab as well. I know mine does.

Great suggestions. On the discount for .edu address etc. When will that .edu be assigned and do they give you a packet of info somewhere listing the discounts or were those companies at a boot first day of school etc? Thanks

No booths. They will be in the "tigerware" section or whatever it maybe called now in the "paws" account. I doubt either are called that anymore but I am just showing my age

I graduated in 2000 so I am pretty out of it for new info on this stuff. I got mine when I got on campus and was registered. But I also couldn't get a student id until i was there and registered like a week before, now they send out IDs a few weeks before I think.
