I am need to replace my old and outdated Linksys router at home. I recently was told that the apple AirPort Extreme is the way to go. I have Mac computers, Apple TV, and an iPhone already so it seams that this is the logical networking choice. Anyone have experience with these or recommend another router?

WRT1900AC if you can justify the cost. If you want to go a little cheaper, then the Asus ac66u. I probably give the Buffalo Airstation Extreme 1750 the nod in the "best router per dollar" in the ac category. I would put the Apple AirPort Extreme 4th, rounding out the list of the top- end routers. There's a D-Link that a lot of reviewers are keen on, but I don't have any experience with it and haven't read too much at all about it compared to these other four.

I have the 802.11n airport extreme and it works well. The AirPort utility app is very simple and makes troubleshooting a breeze. That said, it is definitely not the best router out there for the money.

ETA: Best WiFi router

I'd read this article if I was in the market.

Spend the extra $100 bucks and go ahead and get the time capsule over the Airport Extreme if you deicide to go with that

I am behind the times on my AC router options. Great review. I'd leverage that vs the Buffalo Airstation Extreme 1750, which has slightly more bandwidth for right about the same price (I think $20 cheaper from a quick search, which is why I mention it. I wouldn't pay $20 more for the extra bandwidth, but I would pay $20 less for it!). It also ships with dd-wrt and should be as full-featured as anything you could ever want to put your hands on while keeping setup simple and easy.

If phone app control is a plus, all the Linksys "smart" routers+ the new wrt have dedicated iOS and android control apps. They're also fully DLNA-compatible, but if you're particularly embedded in the Apple ecosystem, you likely don't care/desire that.

Why not spend $100 on a USB HDD that will act as a NAS and be TimeMachine compatible? It's an extra box and an extra plug, but it's also an extra point of failure that doesn't require a "good" component to be thrown out when one part goes "bad"?

I don't disagree with that logic at all I just prefer the wireless back-up. It would cost a little more to do an airport extreme with a "cloud" extrenal HD

Hm...are you understanding that the USB drive plugs into the router and the backup is still "wireless"/over the network? I'm not suggesting the USB drive be plugged to the computer. There are very few routers available today (in the tier we are talking about) that don't have USB 2.0/3.0 or esata ports, making them almost small home file servers. Many of them actually allow you to, and fairly easily, access the files on your home network from outside your network.

Though I can see that by "wireless" you may just be referring to the "clutter" around the router, which is already near your modem and likely several other extra wires.

ETA- that was with a 3TB drive. 2TB USB drives are running in the $70-80 range. Unless I'm finding different sales on the Airport models, this way would be cheaper, albeit again with another cable. If you couple the HDD with any other router (Asus ac56u or Airstation extreme), you'll actually save a real pretty penny over the Apple model and lose zero functionality that I'm aware of, except iOS control of your router's function, to some extent.
