I went through and tried to root my phone through my mac.

I have the superuser app but it isn't rooted.

It says the superuser binary (su) must be updated.

I'm lost. Any ideas?

I have the same phone, but I've been afraid of the kit Kat update because I don't want to lose access to my apps (I moved most of them to the SD card).
Is this why you're rooting (to restore the read /write privileges) , or is it for the sheer joy of rooting?

Are you on 4.4 or 4.3? I'm kind of in the same boat except with the S3. Fortunately, most root methods are the same for both phones across most of the domestic carriers so there's a big Dev community.(This is definitely not true for all phones across all carriers especially if jumping from CDMA to GSM or vice versa. You can brick your phone so make sure you know what you're doing before you try something from another phone)

I'm already rooted with stock 4.3, but rooting 4.4 on our domestic carriers is different from the international version of the phones. Our phones have a locked bootloader.

I haven't been able to find a reliable way to root 4.4.2 on any of the domestic Samsung Galaxies, so I'm just staying on 4.3 for the time being unless something changes. If you are on 4.4, as far as I know you're going to have to find a way to dial back to 4.3 then root, or wait until 4.4.2 is exploited. I'm looking also so let me know if you find anything because I WON'T go to 4.4 unless I KNOW I can root. If you're on 4.3 now try Saferoot.

Why not just use a ROM that runs 4.4?

I'm running a Carbon Kit Kat nightly on my s3 and it is damn near flawless. Pretty amazing for a nightly.

I really just rooted for tether capabilities, and I just haven't gone the extra step to flash any ROMS on this phone. Is the ROM you're running stable, and does it have working tether built in, or a working tether app that you can use with it. Working tether apps are harder to come by and the only one that I have found that works on 4.3 is Wifi Tether Router(Paid app, but cheap).

Want to root for my car radio. Appradio 2 where I can run arliberator. Also for the fun of it

Running 4.4.2 if that helps.

I appreciate all the feedback

In the first link of the thread there is a way to do this and it appears to be the only way I will get it to work.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Yes tethering works on my ROM. I am the same as you, I only rooted to get tether. I found a Carbon Nightly(kitkat based) from 2/18/14 that had working native tether. I tried to get Wifi Tether Router to work but no matter how many different settings I tried it never functioned. The ROM works great, the only draw back is my battery life is not as great as it was. I suspect this is because of the governor that the ROM uses. Not a huge deal because I am almost always near a charger.

There is a way to install a pre-rooted 4.4.2 and then you can use newest safestrap. It is also listed in the thread I linked yesterday

i am still on 4.3 with Hyperdrive ROM, and I have been waiting on the kit kat version for ATT before attempting the 4.4 root
