Boeing Defense, L-3 Communications, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon, spent a total of $4.1 billion on R&D projects, while Google spent $8 billion, Apple $4.5 billion and Microsoft $10.4 billion.

Fallen behind? Is it a competition?
Should military contract budgets be tied to how much google spends?

It would blow your mind how much crazy shite the DOD keeps under wraps.
Hell, we, the general public, didn't know about the SR-71 for a few decades for example.

If they have the warp drive and are keeping it from us I'm gonna be so pissed.

A great deal of defense R&D costs are borne by taxpayers, no? Are those numbers for independent R&D or do they included government funded programs too? I don't really know how it works, but those numbers sound extremely low relative to overall defense spending.

This is a dumb comparison. our military budget shouldn't be based upon our high tech firms budgets.

If we cut down the Defense budget to 0 we'd still run a deficit with current spending rates

we ran a deficit of .7 trillion dollars last year and spent .8 trillion on defense

Last I saw was that the CBO said deficit for FY 2013 was roughly $680 billion and defense spending was roughly $608 billion

This isn't surprising, there is a lot more money to be made in tech. What is the market capitalization of these firms compared to apple and google?
Also, their R&D can benefit the DoD, and while the reverse used to be true its unlikely at this point.

Google makes about $50 billion a year in ad revenue. What the frick does them spending $8B/year on R&D have anything to do with defense contractors?

Not to mention he's picking three of the most cash rich companies on the planet as his comparison.
I'm guessing the military spends a bit more than five billion on R & D.
Even by the (sometimes low) standards of this board, this thread's premise is pretty bad.

You know what L-3 Communications does? They own the communications fiber backbone. They don't actually make anything so I do not think it is bad that they are not spending a bunch of money on R&D.
