i was thinking cruise and schwarzenneger as well. I really don't know exactly what defines a movie star.
I agree with the guy that said john wayne is the ultimate man's man, thus possibly making him the greatest "star" of all time.

It's Marilyn Monroe unless you were restricting it to men. She is the biggest "star" that Hollywood has ever created. Almost everyone in the US and most in the world know who she is. Tons of people have no clue who Bogart or Jimmy Stewart are.
Obviously, her actual acting and movies leave a lot to be desired, but as a star she's number one.

John Wayne. He put butts in the seat just because of his name. Nothing else mattered except it being a John Wayne movie.

I will say John Wayne. Bruce Dern killed Wayne in a movie and for years people hated him.
