If someone in your household is mentally unstable, either permanently or temporarily, what do you do as precaution?

Would you remove firearms, prescription medicines, or other potentially harmful things?

Would you report abnormal behavior to law enforcement?

Would you delve into their private communications to learn more about the extent of their troubles?

How far should or would you go?

Getting banned could be triggering. I wouldn't go that far.

Glad suddenly everyone is now a doctor and can diagnose their friends with a mental condition.

It depends on the extent of their mental illness and what precautions need to be taken. There is no one answer for every situation.

How can anyone answer this? Who is it? What are they doing to make you this concerned? If the person is that close to you, it seems like the next steps would be common sense. You know their triggers.

Most people judge normalcy based on what they themselves would do. This is a wide range that can vary between the extremes. How would anyone, or any group define impaired?

I would get complete control over all guns and drugs and would monitor all communications that I could, seek counseling and try too make sure that I am speaking and interacting at a high level daily with them to gauge their state on mind.

I am speaking hypothetically. I can see if I were a parent, I might want to protect my child from being institutionalized if possible. I might make the wrong decision in doing nothing because I am biased. Should anyone have the authority to go around my wishes for my child?

exactly...lots of normal people do some fricked up shite and lots of crazy people live fairly normal lives. Just throws a monkey wrench right into standard scripted responses.

Yes. If it is found that your child is a danger to himself or others and you are not willing to do what needs to be done, then a psychological hold may be warranted. That doesn't mean life-long institutionalization, but until they can be fully assessed and a treatment plan, if needed, determined.

I work in metal health.. as someone who sees this on a daily basis.... absolutely remove any weapons, drugs, and alcohol from the home. Are they under a doctors care? If not then get them there NOW! Mental illness has a stigma about it to some still, but it is just like any medical condition, its an illness that needs treated and under the right medication can thrive to live a normal life. If it isnt treated "or self medicated" then it can get scary.
