My budget is only about $500 for all of it.

You need more info.. Like how big a room. I assume this is for 5.1 HT use?

Your best bet is likely going to be going with a matched speaker system for 5.1.
Klipsch,Polk,Definitive Technology entry lines should all be in your price range assuming small to med size room that is square like. If a large room you will have a hard time with all satellite speakers.

If you can stretch your budget a little, the Klipsch Quintet with one of those $100 Polk Audio Subs.

Or this is good for the money.

My Vote That Stays In Your Budget

I would browse audiogon and pick up a pair of stereo towers on the cheap. You'll get much better sound out of a nice pair of full-range speakers at $500 than out of a HTIB in my experience.

ETA: of note, this Boston Acoustics 2.1 would be nice

But that assumes if he has a wife she will allow it. Since he has a budget I will assume that to be true.

I agree. It's much better to start with a 2.0 system and build from there. My problem with Audiogon is that I'm always attracted to the high end stuff they have there.

I guess it says a lot about me that this didn't cross my mind.

I picked up a pair of B&W 803 Matrix Series 1 (8/10 appearance, 10/10 sound) for $900 a few months ago. I didn't find them on Audiogon, but I no longer feel the need to look for higher end speakers for a long while.

Just a little 105wpc Sony receiver (Dh-720, I believe) until my next loan check comes in. Then I'll be shopping the 150-200w Class Ds pretty hard.

(2 pair) Pioneer SP-BS41-LR Bookshelf Speakers ~$130/pair
(1) Pioneer SP-C21 or SP-C22 Center Speaker ~$100
(1) Dayton Audio SUB-1200 Subwoofer ~$130

or

Energy Take Classic 5.1, $299 LINK

I'd want a better though in either case.

This might be a dumb ? But my receiver uses the speaker wires any way to convert them to the cable wires? (Don't know if that is the correct term for this)

You use speaker wire to connect speakers. I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to ask. Are you talking about the wire used to connect your components to the AVR?

A good source for quality cables and speaker wire is BlueJeansCable.

Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers. They have bookshelves, towers and centers. Then go to Amazon and get a BIC F12.

Klipsch Synergy speakers when they're on big sale.

sale like this for example:

center channel and surrounds are dirt cheap as well. there's nothing like horn compression drivers. Synergy series are definitely a bargain for those with tight budget and they're almost as good as the Klipsch reference series.
