$104.98 Insignia - Pair

Monoprice - $81.69 each

Aside from the casual listening to music and/or game while in the pool, can anyone justify spending $200 + per speaker on name brand speakers (Nile, Klipsch, Paradigm, etc.) for what I plan to use them for?

The monoprice ones come as a pair. They're not $81.69 unless something has changed in the last year. They stay fairly clear while getting loud enough to hear while in my hot tub. They have a pretty good frequency response that's rather balanced. It's got about all the bass you would want for what you're looking for. I do store them inside and drag them out each time I want to use them. And no, I couldn't justify audiophile stuff for outside, casual listening.

Appreciate the response. Unless I have read it incorrectly, looks like they're 81.69 per speaker today.

Edit, you're absolutely right. It's for the pair. Hell of a deal.

Update, purchased the Monoprice Rock Speakers (8-inch).

Next up, TV for outside (will buy a cheap one), A/V Receiver and Eatel HD set-top box.

The speakers will be set out by my pool and the wires will run underground through conduit.

Want to add speakers to the ceiling of my outdoor kitchen. Is a center speaker absolutely necessary? Or just left and right channel speaker? Not planning on surround sound out there or sub. No need for all that. This brings up another question ...

If I use left and right speakers in-ceiling - hook them up to my A/V receiver - how should I hook up outdoor speakers to A/V receiver? I don't want the receiver to process it as surround sound and not play them all the time. Which input would I use?

I have a cheap Insignia receiver for outside. 4 speaker hook ups but only have 3 speakers hooked up.

Also, if you're near a SAMs Club, I found a 40' Sanyo to put outside. It was a display model that retailed for $700 and I got it for $190. No warranty, but they let me plug it in there to make sure it worked. Our SAMs here has a small section where they place their display models they're trying to get rid of and mark them way down. It was a better deal than looking forever online.

I have Dish and purchased a Tailgater. I take it outside for HD viewing instead of spending money on cable outlets being run, etc. obviously, if you don't have dish this does you no good. With us tailgating often, it was a good investment, not just for out back of our home use.

Will, there's an option for multi channel stereo on the receiver. This setting will play all the speakers in stereo mode.

Put the speakers where you want them. Play stuff in either multi-channel stereo as described below (left and right channels, depending on your model, there may be a center speaker that plays everything) or simple mono. ( all speakers play all things). I prefer stereo when I'm in a controlled environment and am trying to hear the music as it was recorded. That's really not the case outside. So running mono is fine (or the people next to the L channel may not hear much of what's on the right, if they're drastically different). It kind of depends on your outdoor seating arrangements, but in short, any array that makes the music loud and not distorted while playing either mono or multi-st is probably what you are looking for.

Maybe draw a rough sketch of what your setup is with your ideal speaker placement/budget if you want to put that much time and effort into it.

For music, you dont want a center. so its up to you. For TV viewing, do you just want louder sound, or do you want correct sound for the broadcast.

honestly, outside in a non HT setup, L/R is all you need, but consider a sub
