It happened shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday on the Diversion Canal. According to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, a man on a jet-ski attempted to swap water crafts with someone else on a boat while the engines were idle. Investigators said that while getting onto the boat, the operator of the jet-ski slipped and hit the throttle, causing the vessel to surge forward. Deputies said that is when the man fell from the boat, and he hit the propeller as he entered the water. The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, St. Amant Fire Department, and the Gonzales Fire Department Dive Team are helping with the search.

Article makes it sound like the outboard was in gear when swapping. Never never never let anyone in or out of your boat with it in gear. Very sad. Praying for the family

I hate those damned things. The number of people who die on them yearly is amazing.

Prayers sent to family.

Very sad story. Every year this area has 2-3 deaths due to lack of judgment by those who should no better.

Bad weekend

quote:

An eight year-old Louisiana boy died Monday afternoon after being injured in a boating accident on the Wolf River. It happened shortly after 4pm. According to Melissa Scallan with the Department of Marine Resources, three people were on a tube being pulled by a boat. When the boat went around a bend, the tube hit a tree. Witnesses said they saw the boy go under the water, but officials couldn't confirm whether or not the child was wearing a life jacket. The injured boy was rushed to Garden Park Medical Center. An ambulance picked him up from the Riverside Landing boat launch off Menge Avenue in Pass Christian. DMR officials told WLOX News the boy and his family were from Louisiana, but he has not yet been identified. Copyright 2014 WLOX. All rights reserved.
