MT, I need help. Thinking about buying the wife a new car. I see pricing on the dealerships website with a MSRP price and an advertised special price. Toyota Camry by the way. The advertised price is within $500 of the true car price for sales in my area, so it's pretty good.
However, right now Toyota has $1500 cash back and the dealership is offering an additional $500 loyalty cash back.
So the question is, would their advertised special price include the incentives, or not?
They even sent me an unsolicited email offering the $500 loyalty cash back, and said in the email it was "Above and beyond all dealer and factory incentives and can be combined with ALL advertised prices".

So, if I go in and talk to them, my starting point would be $2K under their advertised special price or the truecar price. Does that sound right?

Call em. Dont go in. Ask this exact question, get name of salesman who answered and tell them you will be there to buy.

OK, I can do that. Not sure if this matters, but I don't have to finance, but likely would because of the 0% interest for 36/48 months.
I could however, write a check if I wanted to. Make a difference?

I'm sure they COULD do what you are wondering but WOULD they? I'd call several dealerships (possibly with intentionally faked callback information) and see if they would commit over the phone. There's some dumb folks selling cars who don't know their product or incentives.

Possibly asking for the Finance Manager directly might be a better option. I know one who works at a Honda dealership and he's actually lucid. Not completely moral but conscious.

I absolutely cannot stand the dance of buying a car or truck. It way outweighs the fun of actually getting the new vehicle.

Good luck on the deal.

To me it all depends on whether or not they want to sell me a car.
I'm OK with paying a bit over cost, but not too much.

Did an online chat with them. Said the incentives are factored into the special advertised price. Figured that is what they would say.

I said they would have to do better and all he came back with was "we are motivated to sell Camry's". Not sure if I should go by there or not.

So, truecar lists the price paid in your area, wonder if that includes incentives?

Don't waste your time going by. Get them to commit through email or phone (with follow up confirmation fax/email). Once you have that, then go by.

Of course, you'll have to go by to ensure you are happy with a Camry and make that determination first.

The advertised price would include the factory rebate, but not the extra loyalty cash you qualified for. It shouldn't legally at least.

"factored in" ? Meh. There are many new car sales folks who should have the last name of Massengale. (Plenty of douches.) They'd lie to their own grandmas to make a sale.

Good luck in your struggle.

It is a good car, at least there's that.

So, I found my paperwork from my existing Camry. Purchased it via the Toyota employee plan, as my BIL worked there at the time.

The dealer cost was about $3k less than the MSRP, then they took off the Holdback (2%), Wholesale Finance Reserve (1%) and Toyota Dealer Advertising (1.5%). Then applied rebates and we got to my final payment. Then we talk about trade in (which I hope to trade in my current Camry - but not discussing that until I get a price on the one I want.

If I work from dealer cost on the one I'm looking at, it's $1400 above his advertised price, but doesn't deduce the $2K in incentives or the 4.5% for the holdback and such.

I think I'm going to give him my numbers (dealer cost plus $500) and if he takes it, he takes it, if he doesn't he doesn't, and I keep driving my current car.
I don't have to trade, was just thinking about it.

That sounds like a sound strategy; at least you don't have to get out of your vehicle: when replacing a stolen or totaled vehicle you gotta deal with them on their terms. And that sucks. The end of the model year is coming soon, sometimes they'll incentivize the outgoing year models.

I do my research as to Atlanta, DFW & Houston pricing and then go to the dealer and give them the number I'm going to write on the check and ask them what vehicle they have will qualify. I never have any incentives though and I don't trade in a vehicle. So it's a cleaner deal. Rotsa ruck.

Make sure they are out of re-call.

So, a final update, and thanks for the responses.

I did get the car today. I was straight up with the salesman, who was the same one I chatted with online last night. He was helpful and not pushy at all.
It took a couple of back and forth conversations, but I showed him the dealer cost and what I would pay above that, the $500. He showed me the dealer paperwork and it matched what I had, so I knew it was good.
The only sticking point was the trade in value of my other Camry and I knew that would be a bit of a deliberation point because last year I was ran off the road and ended up with a $5K repair that I knew would affect the value. I did eventually get what I wanted on the trade in, and we did the deal.

Thanks for all the advice!
