It's a shame that the new owner of the old richoux's building decided to unplug and cover the repaired coca cola sign on the buildings " grand opening" simply to squeeze some money out of coke.

They should just move the sign. I'm sure some other building owner downtown would allow it on their building for free.

Not really. Everything's about money. How can you get more and where can you get it from.
It's his building. He can do with it what he pleases.

If the owner of the building didn't purchase the building at a discount because the terms of the sale didn't include the sign, then I don't think it would be an issue.

Metro Councilman John Delgado, who owns a bar on Third Street near the building, said he was appalled by the move.
“This is a disgraceful attempt to make money by attempting to hold a cultural landmark hostage,” he said.
Delgado said if the issue isn’t resolved soon, he would propose an ordinance to penalize “anyone who covering a downtown landmark creating an eyesore,” for more than seven days.

A coke sign is a cultural landmark in Baton Rouge?
This 1993 quote was prescient, perhaps.
“Somebody ought to sit down and think about this, because your corporate types are soon going to be a stateless superclass, people who live for deals and golf dates and care a lot more about where you got your MBA than the country you were raised in. It’s the Middle Ages all over again, these little unaffiliated duchies and fiefdoms, flying their own flags and ready to take in any vassal who will pledge his life to the manor. Everybody busy patting himself on the back because the Reds went in the dumper is going to be wondering who won when Coca-Cola applies for a seat in the U.N."

They said cultural landmark, not national treasure. A 100 year old brand can be a cultural landmark.

Attaboy, John, if things don't go your way, change the law.

What is the historical significance of Coca Cola, or a Coca Cola Sign, in Baton Rouge?

Seems kinda historical to Scruffy.
Also, if this individual acknowledged that he wouldn't own the sign when he purchased the property and even used that to get the building for $15k less, would that be sufficient in court to affect the ownership of the sign?

It's a Coke sign, not a Mona Lisa.
This is extremely stupid, even for Baton Rouge.

Did they finally open the Cane's there? Must have missed that while blackout drunk last weekend

Age does not yield significance, culturally speaking.
If the guy wants to tear it down and sell it, there is no law saying he must flaunt the name of an active competitor in the marketplace. Seems awfully anti competitive.

Also, Scruffy isn't advocating that they should force this guy to keep it up there. It's more the idea that cool, interesting things like this shouldn't be disregarded, even if it is simply the sign for a soft drink company.
If he doesn't want it on his store, they should move it.

Well their is a dispute as to ownership of the sign. The Arts Council of Baton Rouge may own the sign not the building's owner which then begs the question why the buildings owner thinks he can do this to others peoples property.
