Camping during Cool Snap (pics)

So when the late cool spell came through last week, me and two of the middle kiddos decided to go out camping. We didn't even get in the car until 8 pm.
Arrived at Sam Houston National Forest after dark, donned packs and took a nighttime hike to a spot near a water source. Set up camp in the dark, played with fireflies, and racked-out a little after midnight.
Kids pulled out their collapsable fishing poles and wet some hooks
I supervised…
Success (they had 3 stringers like this, plus a few crappie).
They had to clean their own fish.
I didn't let the kiddos have a lighter or matches to start a cooking fire. They had access to a magnesium block and magnifying glass.
Cooked up a mess of perch and ate well that night.
Practiced using the water filter for drinking water…
Fired the little .22 belly gun. Baby girl was Betty Bad-arse again as usual. Consistently hitting a palmetto frond at 75 yard with a 2-inch barrel pistol. (man…I've got to get that girl into competitive pistol shooting)
Hiked. Saw the sights. I about stepped on a huge king snake and nearly shite my pants. Ate plenty of dewberries along the way.
A great 2 days out and about.

Awesome that you have your kids involved in the outdoors like that!

I only wish I had that type of knowledge to pass on

Some of my fondest memories growing up was camping with my dad.

Even older ones are better. Can be had for cheap on Amazon and AbeBooks.com.
Enjoyable reading on the shitter and you'll have yourself trained up in no time. Lots of fun to experiment.

cool weekend. however, don't shoot a 22 pistol at eye level in the woods. shoot at the tree tops.
just a little gun safety

Nice. Looks like a really great time.
My three daughters weren't into camping/hiking. Pop was never really big into outdoor stuff (unless you consider golf) either.
I've been fishing with pop exactly once and hunting twice. Once my son is old enough, we will have a very different relationship from the one I had with pops.

That's the nice part of being grown up....we get to choose to improve upon what our parents did.
eta: I can't believe nobody gave me any shite about that stringer of tiny-arse perch and me laying on my arse sleeping while the kids were fishing.
