Alrighty so I've mentioned it before on here, but I'm going to be taking a new job soon. I have worked it out, however, to where I will have about a 3-4 month break from my current job to do some traveling before I start my new job.

What is the cheapest health care plan I can go with just to make sure Obama doesn't slap me come tax time? Also, if I elect to extend the plan I have with my current provider, do I need to contact them directly or do I need to work with my current employer on this? I doubt I extend my current plan as the increased costs will make it very expensive, but it could be worth having just in case.

Just a healthy, late 20s, active male who hasn't been doctor sick in over a decade (knock on wood).

I'm a healthcare provider and our company is dropping employee healthcare due to that ahole because group premiums are going up 40% this year. fortunately they will give us a raise to offset cost and I will be able to tag on my wife's insurance.

I think you will have to pony up for cobra or do without since open enrollment is over. Voluntarily leaving your job for another does not qualify as a qualifying life event for special enrollment. The system has changed and you are screwed. In my case losing insurance because employer no longer offers counts as qualifying life event - so I can get new insurance anytime.

If you will only have 3 months or less without insurance you won't be penalized. Penalty otherwise is 1% of your income or 95$ whichever is higher

I am in the same situation. Need it for 2 months. Mid 20s, non-smoker, was quoted $190 yesterday.

That is what I have always wondered about this whole bullshite law...

If you have a job until June 15th and then quit and don't work through the end of the year, do you have to pay the fine? You had insurance more than half of the year

What is the "Without Insurance" time farm in order to be assessed the penalty

Call BC/BS and get a quote. I did this (prior to Obamacare) and paid 1/3 of what my Cobra would have cost. Even with the new healthcare laws, I'm sure it's still cheaper than a Cobra plan.

$190 is cheap compared to some things I've seen. You're just insuring against something catastrophic for a few months anyway. Just pay it and enjoy your hiatus.

He uses his cell phone several times a day and every day of his life and can go without it if he choses.
Companies chose to get into the healthcare arena and were making plenty of money before this trainwreck.

What are you more worried about?

1) Not having health insurance and something catastrophic happening?

2) A fine the IRS tont levy, cant lien on, wont collect on and is largely just a boogeyman?

Some things you pay for to use, some things you pay for and hope to never use, and so should apple lower the prices on everything because they make money?

It's called insurance for a reason, in that it is insurance against bankruptcy/financial doom if you have a serious medical issue.

In short, normally if you owe the IRS money they can bring the full force of the law down on you. Think Al Capone or a lien against you.

The ACA "penalty" is a paper tiger, like a red light camera ticket. The law specifically excludes the IRS from using civil or criminal proceedings to collect the penalty from you. I guess they could withhold it from your return if you get one, in theory, but they probably wont.

So if you arent particularly worried about getting in an accident and would rather save the money for travel than spend it on insurance, dont worry about the IRS knocking on your door.

Shoot go to Europe for your whole vacation and tell the IRS you were covered under a foreign insurance plan for the months you went without "creditable coverage"

And you are willfully going without health insurance? Doesn't seem very smart to me.
