The greatest American soccer player ever isn't going to Brazil, and it's because he didn't earn his place

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we're done.

There are arguments to be made - "he didn't earn his spot" isn't one.

Donovan's real opponents were Brad Davis and Chris Wondolowski

If you needed any more of a mic drop...

There's a reason I can't find photos of them in US shirts.

It could also be argued that Donovan "earned" a spot by stepping up on the biggest stage for the NT for over a decade, including last summer.

That and being more talented than any other forward we have in our pool and being a more of a potential match changing sub for his passing than Brad Davis if we need a late goal (which is highly likely).

I just don't see that Davis will really play much aside from some utter catastrophe and Klinsmann could have well made this a non-issue by bringing Donovan and only using him sparingly if needed.

But at 32 and several steps slower, what's the point. At least those others that "haven't earned it" are young with loads of talent and potential. Gotta think ahead. The future is now.

I don't know why people keep posting players that were selected at different positions. Jurgy said he was looking at Donovan up top only. A defender had no influence in Landy being left off.

We embrace the future with Brad Davis?

Right. So if it's landy or wondo hard not to take wondo this year.

Seems like it was Donovan or Brad Davis.

Well, when it comes to earning spots...

And I guess Klinsmann saying Donovan being looked at only as a forward was the first huge warning sign. Grouping Dempsey and Donovan as forwards and saying that only 4 would make it to Brazil was the first sign that he was looking for an excuse to cutting Donovan.

Of course that makes the midfield, of which we are bringing 8 guys to Brazil, an extremely weak group 1-8.

Didn't Jurgy say he was only looking at LD up top? I was pretty sure he was quoted when the 30 man was released.

the article explicitly mentions davis and wondo, which i quoted above.

look, those are easily the 2 least talented guys in the 23 and neither are young. donovan is lightyears better than them now and always. it's absurd. wondolowski fricking sucks, but i guess per usual, he's in the right place at the right time.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. Brad Davis is a specialty sub. I think if anything it was more of wondo vs LD

He says a lot of stuff. LD was listed as a Forward for the Gold Cup as well, but still played in the midfield.

Again, I think we are overreacting to a decision that isn't going to change our result in Brazil. Obviously we will never be able to say for sure whether it was the right or wrong call. I hate it for Landy as he has been the face of US soccer for a while.
