If this theory is true, the big question is, Where in the timeline does the Great Filter occur?

And if we were to find fossilized complex life on Mars, Bostrom says “it would be by far the worst news ever printed on a newspaper cover,” because it would mean The Great Filter is almost definitely ahead of us

This part makes no sense and is frankly dumb. Could it not be argued the great filter was in the past and destroyed the fossilized complex life?

1. We’re Rare (The Great Filter is Behind Us) One hope we have is that The Great Filter is behind us—we managed to surpass it, which would mean it’s extremely rare for life to make it to our level of intelligence.

I personally think this is the case. There is just so much in the universe that can destroy life before it can develop to the point of interstellar travel.

But we wouldn't have reached our Filter yet.

I think the only thing he missed was a Possibility 11 - The distnce between advanced, intelligent life is too far to tackle, given the restrictions of physics.

My guess is that the 'filter' is ahead of us, and that when an intelligent species gets too advanced, they have the power to make themselves extinct and do so, either intentionally or by accident.

Mediocrity Principle, whose starting point is that there is nothing unusual or rare about our galaxy, solar system, planet, or level of intelligence, until evidence proves otherwise

All the evidence we have on earth...ALL the tangible evidence says we ARE the most special beings in existence.

The onus is on them to prove we AREN'T the most advanced beings with evidence. This burden of proof shifting is ridiculous.

My theory is that every civilization reaches the singularity before it contacts anyone and, since logic and reason are constants, every civilization decides not to contact everyone else.

That shite just blew your mind.

I do agree that it is in our best interest to not make contact with any other intelligent life.
