Antarctic ice loss has doubled: study
Posted by BaddestAndvari on 5/20/14 at 7:35 pm410
Antarctic Ice is loosing ice at double the rate study says
quote:
Antarctica is shedding 160 billion tonnes a year of ice into the ocean, twice the amount of a few years ago, according to new satellite observations. The ice loss is adding to the rising sea levels driven by climate change and even east Antarctica is now losing ice.
quote:
“The increased thinning we have detected in west Antarctica is a worrying development,” said Professor Andrew Shepherd, at the University of Leeds, who led the study. “It adds concrete evidence that dramatic changes are underway in this part of our planet.”
Professor David Vaughan, at the British Antarctic Survey and not involved in this research, said: “The increasing contribution of Antarctica to sea-level rise is a global issue, and we need to use every technique available to understand where and how much ice is being lost.

The study is a lie. Those climatologists just want more money, and they want politicians to control our consumer choices.
Did I do that right, deniers?

chrism3 on /science points out some math I'd like to share.
Thoughts?

MATH!
How much does one Gigatonne of melted ice (1 km³ of water) raise the oceans?
The oceans occupy 361 million square kilometers ( 361 x 106 km²) of the Earth’s surface.
If one cubic kilometer of water (i.e., one gigatonne of water) is spread evenly over the entire 361 million square kilomters, the thickness of the new layer of water will be given by:
1 km³ / 361 x 106 km² = 2.78 x 10-6 meters = 2.78 microns.
Or, in terms of gigatonnes:
1 Gt x (1 km³/Gt) / 361 x 106 km² = 2.78 x 10-6 meters = 2.78 microns / Gt
That is, one cubic kilometer of water (i.e., one gigatonne of water) will add less than 3 millionths of a meter to the oceans!
Thoughts?

What should we do about it? You know, besides having the government steal more money from the taxpayers.

And juat this year a climatologist was trapped in Antarctic sea ice.
Then you have to reconcile that the earth hasnt warmed in a decade....yet ice is melting.
it is truly a quandry....

Better tighten it up then.

Did I do that right
Would you like to discuss Western Antarctic snowfall, glacier formation, breakdown, etc. Would you like to discuss the impact of diminished precipitation in a relatively arid environment?

More taxes should put a stop to that ice melting, huh Rex?
Hell, these Progs don't want to stop the ice melting - just like they don't want to stop racism.
They thrive on this shite. Lets them run their campaigns smearing someone whose politics they don't like, milk money from their rich sycophants, solidify their voting blocs, and consolidate more power!!!!!

Guess we know now why we came of the ice age. The climate changes.
Weird...

It's really not the melting ice that adds to the volume of water. Only melted ice on land adds to the sea levels. Melted ice in water adds no sea level rise.
However the property of water that adds the most sea level rise (or fall) is the volumetric expansion properties of water. The coefficient of volumetric expansion as a function of temperature is rarely taught in high school and college freshmen level courses because it is much easier to assume that water is incomprehensible. And for most practical applications, it is. The volumetric expansion coefficient of water is 0.0002 m^3/m^3-C. That is for every degree C, water will expand or contract by 0.0002 m^3.
The HUGE issue with making an accurate calculation of sea level rise or fall is getting a accurate average temperature. Not only would you need thousands upon thousands of data points on the ocean surface, but also at every level of the sea. The more the better to acquire an accurate average ocean temperature.
The other issue is getting accurate model of the geometry of the sea shores around the world. That is, it would be easy to calculate the sea level rise as a function of temperature if the seashore had nice geometric walls like a swimming pool. But sea shores exhibit vasts and diverse geometries.
Once you get an accurate accounting of land ice, sea volume, sea shore geometry and most of all and accurate average sea temperature the calculation is easy. The difficult part is accurate data collection and collecting A LOT.
