If Benson would have moved the Saints to San Antonio permanently...

After Katrina, if Benson would have moved the Saints to San Antonio permanently, would the league have facilitated some move of a team here afterwards? I always kinda wonder what would have happened. No way the league would have expanded, but would Tagliabue have found some way to goad the Jaguars over here or something?

And what kind of trainwreck would the San Antonio Saints be now? What a nightmarish thought.

Games weren't regularly selling out until the Saints drafted Reggie. New Orleans is a very small city, and it isn't the biggest destination for pro teams. It would have been very hard to get another football team. I think.

It also would have looked very bad for the image of the league for the NFL to run out of the city at that particular time.

I don't see the league moving a team here if the Saints had left. In all honesty, Katrina was a blessing for this organization. It, along with the terrible season after the storm, ignited the fan base and gave the people of the region a rallying point.

Probably. Goodell has this undying need to stroke his ego and leave an everlasting mark on everything the league does. Do you think he would have passed up this hypothetical chance to be seen as the hero who returned football to a city dealt so many blows?

no, and i personally wouldn't have cared if he stroked his ego to bring back a team to the city.

LA does not have a team yet so i'd say New Orleans would not have a new team if the Saints left.

I honestly wonder if the city would've come back. There was something about games in 06 that just made everything better. And without saints games on Sunday to this day I'd be a miserable unhappy person. Also, there'd be no real reason or money to renovate the Dome so for all I know it would still be sitting there. Or maybe even destroyed.

Scary to think about.

San Antonio would be hosting the Super Bowl in 2018, because obviously Goodell hates New Orleans.

It also helps that Tijuana is closer and Goodell likes the Donkey Shows.

San Antonio was never a viable option.

There is no way Jerry Jones would ever let Tom Benson claim San Antonio. That's his property.

Benson said before the hurricane that he was offered a billion dollars to move the team to L.A. I believe him. That's where he was going.

It's an eerie thought. I'd imagine there'd be this faction of Saints diehards who'd be pulling for the team in San Antonio, and then a smattering of Texans fans throughout. But the city as a whole may have really never gotten back. Even non-football fans in the city rallied around them. Still, I think there would have been this urge to put a team back here. True that LA doesn't have a team yet, but that's based on economics. There would have been a pretty public clamoring here for a team.

Very Scary, and it was a very real possibility. Glad it worked out in our favor.

Would be a good amount of years before another franchise made it to NOLA.

Everything else the same, that would be a very successful franchise.

Would the Saints ever have won a Super Bowl if Nick Saban never leaves LSU? Think about it.

and that would be something if it were true, but it isn't. These numbers reflect 1967-2004

Based on statistics from 1967 through 2004, the Saints lead the NFL in average fans per win, a ranking that considers a team's on-field performance and its attendance history. The rankings do not include the expansion Houston Texans, whose three seasons are not enough to be statistically significant.

The Saints lead the NFL with an average of 76,088 fans per win, derived by dividing the team's all-time attendance of 17,880,875 by its 235 total wins. Cleveland is second at 75,721 fans per win. Detroit is third. None of those teams has ever reached a Super Bowl, but Cleveland and Detroit have played in conference championship games.

-- Even when victories are not calculated into attendance history, the Saints rank 10th in the league in overall regular-season attendance, with a total of 17,610,161, despite playing in the league's fifth-smallest market.

-- The Saints' per-game attendance average of 60,935 ranks 13th, ahead of traditional powerhouses New England, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Minnesota, Green Bay, Washington and San Francisco. Those teams have combined for 35 Super Bowl appearances and 22 championships.

Also keep in mind, we had a 36-game sellout streak going into 2005...

The problem with putting a team in L.A. is that the other owners lose it as a leverage point for getting concessions from cities and states to build new stadiums. It seems like every time a team wants a new or renovated stadium, a SB in that city is the carrot and a threatened move to L.A. is the stick.
