Kids in their 20's, what is the biggest mistake your parents made with you

I am a parent with kids in their teens, and fighting the being too strict versus too lenient battle daily. I have a 15 year old boy that acts like he is 12 and a 12 year old girl that acts more mature than I often do. I know a lot of you on here on in your 20's low 30's and reflecting back where do your parents screw it up or get it right?
We all think we are going to be better parents that the idiots that raised us, but in actual practice it a hell of a lot harder than you expect.
I am not talking about material things, other than those of you that grew up privileged how did you or your peers keep from becoming "snotty little shits" for lack of a better phrase. Aka some kids get everything they want to turn out great other ones are huge Aholes.

Time to spend alot of time with him, teach him how to become a man.

Teaching me how to handle my personal finances. Learning on my own has been a pain.

Not explaining to me how screwing around in HS would affect my future, and how difficult and expensive a college education is. I had to join the Marines and work really hard to get into LSU.

With me and my sister, my parents were hesitant to let us make our own mistakes. SUPER over bearing at times. You have to let kids screw up on their own and learn from that. I mean, not break the law, but yeah...

Until you're 30 and you realize you've turned into those idiots.
I can't help you. My kids are 9, 4, and 1.

my father biggest mistake was treating me like an a-hole for most of my life. I rarely talk to him, and would not talk to him at all if it wouldn't cause repercussions for other people.
Do your best, stay nimble and question every decision and you will do fine. Much of what the kid turns into is determined by genetics, while you had control over that to a certain extent, you know don't have control.

They put way too much emphasis on grades vs. real world experience. A great GPA with no experience gets you JACK shite!

Just be consistent and the little jerks will think you know what you are doing regardless.

Be there for your son, teach him to do things/become a man as others suggested. Mine was an offshore guy most of my life, mom raised us mostly. Biggest thing that pisses me off about my dad (offshore 14/14 - 28/28) is he had all this time off when he wasn't at work and he still did very little with us and relied on my mom.
No idea for your daughter, if you figure that shite out let me know. Got one on the way.

Emphasize how important high school is and college.
My parents allowed me to focus on sports and didn't stress school.

I know exactly what you mean.

As far as being too strict or to lenient, they did a great job. I was instucted to maintain a 3.0 or better or I was given a 9:00 curfew until the grades were back up to par. At 15 I was allowed to drink at home with friends as long as we all gave up the keys (my other friends' parents allowed the same thing). That may be frowned upon today, but it allowed us to understand the affects of alcohol in a safe environment, and not one of my 12 or so close friends ever got a DWI or in an accident that involved alcohol. I plan on following the same patterns with my kids.

Mine as well. I was never taught the value of saving money as my parents basically lived paycheck to paycheck.

Maybe making my uncle deliver the sex talk to me when I was in 5th grade during the Clinton scandal. My uncle's incredible advice to an 11 year old that I'll never forget:
"If you've got a condom, and she's hot, frick her."
