I went to Costco and bought two tri tips for $7.99 a pound. I smoked them for 90 minutes at 225 then finished them off on the grill for about 7 minutes per side. I let them rest for 10 minutes then started slicing. I should have waited a little longer. A lot of the juices ran out.

Tri tips are hard to find in BR. I rarely see them. I just happen to see them at Costco and had to buy them.

You might have lost a little juice, but it still looks damn good. Solid crusting. Good job.

I've never cooked a tri tip, but those sure look good. The outside is just the way I like it.

Oh that looks beautiful.
What did you season with? I'm thinking it's time for me to smoke some meat.

A little Tony's, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, chili powder, cayenne, black pepper. I normally add some brown sugar to my rubs but I finished the tri tips on the grill on high heat and didn't want to burn the sugar.

Great cut of meat for the smoker. I highly recommend. Tri tips are a very small portion of the cow so it's not very easy to get always. I'll always pick them up when I see them.

Kind of surprised they cooked that fast. They look fantastic.

Nope, the cooking time in the recipe I followed is for medium. The thicker section of the meat is slightly over medium. Next time I will smoke it at 200 for 90 minutes to get a perfect medium.

I like my tri tip rare and juicy, i usually smoke it a little over an hour then sear the outside on the grill. Meat thermometer comes in handy for getting the timing right.

I have been able to get Tremonte's to remove the tri-tip from their large sirloin roasts a couple of times, but they would rather not. Would be great to find a dependable source...one of my favorite large cuts for the smoker/grill.

That looks like it's just on the right side of blue.
