speaking of, what exactly do you need to apply for one first time?

You can go to the office in New Orleans.

I know you can pay to have it expedited by mail but I don't know how fast.

If you are traveling internationally in less than 2 weeks or need to obtain a foreign visa within 4 weeks, you are eligible to schedule an appointment at this passport agency with proof of travel.

Thanks. I had seen that, but was hoping there'd be a way to get it done quicker for just a renewal.

Honestly don't remember. Had it done at the post office. It was relatively painless from the little I remember.

there are different options online if you go through an expedition agency. Faster you need it the more money you'll have to pay.

If you go to a passport office like the one in New Orleans then you'll need proof that you're travelling within 2 weeks (I think 2 weeks...) of the day of your appointment. If not 2 weeks it's 3- but it has to be relatively close to your appointment date.

Well, that's the rub, I guess. I'm not going to pop for a trip if I won't be certain the passport will be renewed on time.

then just look online for an expedition company to do it. You can opt for a bunch of different time frames from overnight to 2-3 weeks. Up to you

Same thing here. Went to the main post office and applied for the whole family. You cannot renew a Katrina damaged passport so the wife and I had to apply from scratch. Much faster than I thought it would be.

I've used one- can't remember the name- to expedite an actual passport but not a renewal. I almost went through one to get pages added to mine and my son's, but it was actually just easier to go to the US Embassy here

Cost my wife and I several hundred bucks to get 2 day NEW passports for our children, one 4 years old and one 5 months. That was to fly to Vancouver.
