Looking for suggestions for where to stay this fall in the Ozark Hot/Springs area.
I haven't been since I was a kid--was trying to think of a fun place for all involved. older parents and a 3 1/2 year old boy
hot springs/mountains/crater diamond national park?
btw--we went to Great smokies this past year---it was great
long story short. My folks and my wife's folks are getting older. we live in Wisconsin, my folks live in Louisiana so we try to find places to meet and vacation with our son that are kinda convenient to both and also fun for a young child

Ozarks are no where near Hot Springs. Ozarks are awesome. You could awesome book a cabin at Petit Jean. Slightly closer and very nice. Great hiking and fishing.

Would someone like to compare a vacation in the smokies and the Ozarks as well?
Sorry for the thread hijack. My kids are getting a little older now and I want to take them to one of the two mountain areas within driving distance.
Have to save the air trips to other locations, so no Colorado or anything like that for now.

We would probably stay in one area, and travel out to say-- the Hot Springs area for a day or so

Buffalo National River, Hawksbill crag, Boston Mountains. That's all you'll need.

I saw someone else posted about lake quichita houseboats. Best vacation ever.
We had 4 families. Bunch of kids 6-12 on an 80 foot boat. All the kids said it was better than Disney.
We've been twice. Would be an unbelievable college group activity too.
Stay away from Hill's Lake Houseboat rentals. Horrible service. Probably kicked off the lake by now.

Well are you looking for entertainment options, just a place to chill out for a few, do touristy things and shop, do any specific activities (fish, boat, music/shows, spectator sports, civil war sites, art/musuems) I'll assume hiking and mountain biking are not in the cards.

that's just it...
trying to get a little bit of everything, my wife and I enjoy hiking/outdoors---parents enjoy entertainment/eating/civil war etc---and then I thought the little one would enjoy the outdoors/crater diamond and such

Heard it was quiet and pretty... but very boring. Hopefully this was more helpful than it was wordy ;)

We did a family reunion a few yrs ago and rented 2 of those house boats and spent a week on Lake Havasu. Had an awesome time. Just make sure everyone gets along. If spouses or cousin get pissed at each other, there's nowhere to go, unless you just decide to drop them off on a sandbar and leave them there for the night.
This year, we are doing another reunion, we've decided to rent 2 chalats in an area around Branson, MO. We've got Moosey Moose and Big Buck for a week and a half

You may want to spend a couple days in a few parts of the state then.
Murfreesboro/Crater of Diamonds park is great for kids and digging in the dirt. Older folks might not find the fun in that.
Hot Springs in the fall doesn't offer much. Maybe get a spa treatment if any of the Bathhouses are open, there's a Gangster museum but I couldn't tell you if it's any good.
Mountain View has a big arse cave with a tour that you ride through the cave and don't have to walk or worry about it being hazardous conditions, there's always something going on in the fall at the Ozarks Folk Center and there's some folk music shows as well.
In NWA there's lots of hiking/caves/biking, the Civil War battlefields are up here too, there's Crystal Bridges museum in Bentonville, Eureka Springs has the great Passion Play (story of Jesus), Eureka has a Big Cat rescue (Turpentine Creek) too and all the little shops, shows, and whatnot and the haunted hotel. Branson isn't far either if you make it this far up. You can drive to Harrison and get your photos taken in front of the racist billboard.
There's a bajillion cabins to rent, fishing guides galore, a little places to enjoy along the way.
