I've never used TomTom, but I did like the garmin nuvi provided in a rental car I used once.

Tom Tom sucks

TomTom makes no sense. I truly DO NOT understand their horrible route calculations. I have had experience with both, and Garmin wins by a land slide. If someone has truly used both, I have no idea how you could recommend a TomTom over a Garmin.

Is this a bumped thread from 2005?

My tablet with 4g service and Google Maps is the best GPS I have ever used. I have a mount for it in my truck just like a GPS.

In my line of work, gps is essential. I've owned dozens.
Tom Tom is better for a couple features:
-It saves your 3 favorite POI categories. Restaurants, hotels, gas stations etc. Never have to search for it.
-One free year of traffic - it's legit and real time.
-New versions allow you to zoom-out and stays there. Pet peeve is when I'm on the interstate and it defaults to a tight zoom so it's nothing but a line and a car.
Garmin = easiest to use
I was a 100% garmin guy until I got my first Tomtom. Both are fine. Be sure to buy the bigger screen.

Think before you post. Was that necessary?

My phone
I need a GPS constantly and am also on my phone constantly. Having a stand alone unit is essential but as I said my tablet fills that need.

Absolutely
I wasn't even aware they still made those things.
Eta: to answer your question I always owned garmin, hell I could probably pull one out the back of the closet and give it to you if you want

I need something other than my phone that can be mounted somewhere in my vehicle.

Sidetopic: drivers who are using GPS and miss their turn only to slam on the brakes suddenly to make a u turn without blinkers need to be shot in the face.

I have had both and still prefer the tomtom...the menus just seem a little more intuitive to me for some reason...
honestly, I would go with either at this point...but there is one thing that I will insist on...
I will NEVER buy another GPS unit that does not have free map updates for life...
