Big Ten lost $4.5 million on bowl tickets sales

The ticket sales don’t impact the schools individually, but rather the conference as a whole. Through open-records requests obtained from all seven Big Ten bowl teams, future teams Maryland and Rutgers and each of their bowl opponents, the Gazette learned that the conference had to absorb “nearly $4.5 million” due to unsold bowl tickets.
from the article
Nebraska only sold 1,748 of the 12,678 tickets allotted.
Iowa (78%) and Michigan State (94%) were the only Big 10 schools that sold more than half of their allotted tickets.
The Big10 is considering a new model that their bowl tie-ins will lower the payouts to teams in exchange for lower ticket guarantees

I didn't think they'd travel to see UGA again, in JAX of all places

I kept hearing they sold out, but I got my RB tickets, online through 3rd party
On a side, I was kind of curious about the conference-wide impacts too.

Well, us Michigan fans were not going to pay to go see our team lay a stink egg.
And you gotta be kidding me, Ohio fans. You were in a BCS game and you didn't sell more than half your allotted tickets?

Orange Bowl tix were pretty cheap on the secondary market, i thought. Might be a Better deal than buying through school

Yea, there were a lot of Buckeye fans in attendance, more than I thought would actually show up for this game

That's what happens when a fan base continuously goes to BCS games. They get burnt out.
Michigan fans wouldn't know anything remotely close to that.
And when you add in the conference championship game, and the 60 inch HD TVs that everyone has now with $1 craft beers 20 feet away with no line and grilled burgers, dogs and dip for a mere few cents with front row seats, well you get the idea.
Bowls are going to suffer some serious attendance issues with all these factors present.

Bowl tickets are WAY too expensive on face value. It makes no sense not to get them on the secondary market.

there are really only two reasons to buy from the school
either you are high up enough the totem poll w/donations that the best bowl seats around the 50 are available to you or you need to buy from the school in order to up your point levels so you can get (or keep) access to better season tickets for home games.
everyone else should just go ahead and buy from the secondary market b/c you will find significantly better prices and seats to a large majority of the bowls.

I think a lot of this has to do with teams going to the same places over and over and over again. I wish tie-ins would be done away with and it could go to a draft-style selection

6-4 in 10 appearances with one BCS championship isn't too shabby.
10 is also the most of any school.
So yeah, pretty burnt out.

Yep. I think it was 80 for the capone or outback bowl . I think I'll pass on that

unless you're team is playing in a meaningful game (BCSNCG or now the playoffs), there is literally no reason to purchase your tix through the university.... unless you just like throwing money away.

Says alot about the overall quality of the conference

The B1G often got an at large BCS bid. Most of tOSU's BCS games weren't the Rose Bowl.
But continue your blind hate of the B1G.

BCS appearances by conference
Big Ten - 28
SEC - 27
You might want to learn to check facts once in a while.

Could this be a symptom of the overall midwest economy?
It's not like the overall economy has gotten better for the vast majority of middle class CFB fans. Everybody's getting stretched thin financially, there's less people than ever that have savings and disposable income for a plane ticket, hotel, dining out, and a football game ticket.
That, combined with the vast improvements in television techology?

Ohio State fans also had the BTCCG to contend with. That adds a hefty expense to the post season. This coming season will be even worse for the playoff teams with the potential for three post season games. That is going to get very expensive.
