I must say I'm VERY surprised by this. Is Arkansas THAT much different from Louisiana and Mississippi?

quote:

Arkansas lawmakers have blocked a resolution urging the state Supreme Court to uphold a ban on same-sex marriage.

A non-binding resolution objecting to a judge's decision striking down the ban failed before the Arkansas Legislative Council on a procedural vote Friday. The resolution would have urged justices to overturn Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza's ruling striking down all measures preventing gay couples from marrying.

The proposal failed to win enough votes to be considered by the panel.

The resolution by Republican Sen. Jason Rapert also called on the court to invalidate hundreds of marriage licenses that have been issued since Piazza's ruling last week.

Promising, but surprising.

Toddy, do you realize how much it will hurt democrats electorally once this issue dies down? What social "issue" will you move on to after?

Surprisingly, it is. In some ways, anyway. There are still dry counties

Why would democrats "move on to" abortion? They don't oppose it and it's legal.

Arkansas has a higher percentage of white liberals, and is actually as libertarian as it is conservative.

Bill Clinton
..then Mike Huckabee...
current Democrat Governor and Democrat AG who openly supports gay marriage. Politics here are sometimes unpredictable.

Arkansas is not the same as Mississippi or Louisiana. We've always been a little more libertarian, IMO. We narrowly missed legalizing medical mj in 2012 49-51%.

Lot of retirees from the midwest in Arkansas. They tend to have a civilizing influence.

Arkansas, Iowa and Missouri are the three worst political states in the country. Ohio, Florida and Minnesota are also contenders.

They're mercenary political states that have no ideological strength and can be swayed very easily to whoever promises them the most.

Say what you will about the stupidity of some southern states or liberal states, but a lot of the time we stick to our tenets whether good or bad for us.

Well that's one interpretation I guess.

Or they are less ideologically stagnant and more open-minded politically.

Arkansas' main difference from Louisiana and Mississippi is that politics aren't nearly as racially charged here, so liberalism and Democratic leanings aren't tied as strongly to race or racial politics. In that way, its a little more like Missouri or Iowa.

Pulaski and Washington were the only counties issues licenses until Conway announced a few minutes ago they have started. I fully except the Arkansas Supreme Court to issue a stay, probably later today.

I just read that the Arkansas Supreme Court is considered the 10th most liberal in the country. Hopefully they will uphold Piazza's ruling.

Licenses have been issued in Carroll and Marion and Saline counties, too, although those have all stopped because of the ongoing tug of war.

OR MAYBE,

those states are very diverse and a true cross section of political ideology which has been proven to actually create a very healthy political environment.

Right. They had all stopped as of yesterday. After Piazza clarified that he was also striking down an old statute as unconstitutional they started reissuing them.
