At his peak this guy was just as good as jordan, lebron, magic etc... The most dominant force in nba history... So do we consider him top 5 all time on that accord ?

Maybe you do...I do not. Top ten, top fifteen...not top five. For me at least.

Sheer power-top 5
Rebounding-top 5
Passing-top 50
Scoring-top 10
Free throws-bottom 10

Overall I'd say solid top 15 maybe top 10 of my generation but when you factor in the players of the 70's and 60's then he is solid top 25.

Laker fan

Didn't have the moves of elite centers.

Borderline lazy.

But awesome still.

Could have been more. God, he could have been the GOAT.

15-20 NBA players all-time.

No way he's top 10 especially when you consider LeBron still playing.

Probably # 13, 14 or 15

Most dominant post player of all time.

No, he didnt have the post moves that Hakeem had, or the touch and finesse that Duncan had. But, he didnt need them. He had sheer size and strength on his side. And it was unstoppable.

I dont know about top 5 all time though. MJ and Oscar Robertson are givens for me. And everyone has MJ on their Mt Rushmore. Hes a lock for the conversation. Then I have Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Thats my top 4. And there are a lot of guys that you can make the case for to be in that 5th spot. Its all opinion really. Once you ask "who is the top 5 players of all time", all of those players are great and dominant. Its just all opinion and preference.

I will say this: I wouldnt take any C over Shaq.

This guy gets it.

Everyone else is romanticizing.
quote:

Even he admitted at his laugh filled farewell (from playing) press conference that he could have been more than he was.

O'Neal was one of the elite players of the era. But he also was a guy swept five times in playoff series, including in the 1996 conference finals against the Bulls when he failed to even show up until late for a crucial game.

O'Neal was this feared physical force, yet he never led the league in rebounding. Heck, even Chris Webber did once. Shaq may have played for one of the most underachieving college teams ever, teamed with Stanley Roberts and Chris Jackson and never advancing past the round of 32. Shaq had a great career, and he was one of the elite players of the last two decades. He was a better person than most, unusually charitable and a touchable star who let fans in. Shaq was good for the game. But let's not get too carried away with what he accomplished.
