I watched this entire thing:

CNC awesomeness

The concept of turning a hunk of metal into something is pretty cool.

I use a similar type machine everyday in my dental practice to make crowns.
Cerec Crown Machine

Patients are constantly amazed by this technology and are thankful they can get their tooth fixed in a single appointment.

I'm not sure but it looks to be very complex. Since it has gear teeth I assume it's some moving part somewhere.

It doesn't look to be anything functional, probably just a display piece that looks cool and shows off what it can do.

What's the price tag on one of those things? A few $100k?

I can't watch the video at work right now but is this the machine that Leno uses to make the parts for his old cars?

I worked in a machine shop in HS and I used to love watching those CNC's make parts. It was almost hypnotizing. That is a very complex part. I wonder how long it took to program something like that.

I worked in a machine shop during HS and right after college and it was amazing to watch these pieces take shape.

Learning how to program CNC's is a lot easier than one would think.

Edit: That video is a lathe FWIW

Pretty cool. I've ran CNC flat machines before. Lasers and punches. Never lathes of mills.

Cutting steel and stainless up to 1 inch. Pretty easy, but shite can go south quick.

Pretty sure that was real time. If it wasn't, it sure wasn't far off.

Keep those tools sharp and your rpms up and you can really do some damage.

I couldn't imagine what goes into producing the G-code for a part like that. But truth be known the G-code is probably easily produced by software once the proper 3D CAD drawings are made.

I have a small desk top 3 axis CNC and I have been fooling with it for about 2 years and still not fully competent in the use of the softwares. I can tell you if you put garbage in, you get garbage out. Your CAD renderings have to be good.

There's no way they ran a part that complex in 7 mins.
