So the question is will he be charged for killing the wolf?
If you kill a bear in La because you think it's a hog you will be.
quote:
The hunter, who hasn't been named, shot the female wolf near Fairbank in northwest Buchanan County believing it to be a similar-looking coyote
It is legal to shoot coyote in Iowa, though hunting wolves is illegal as they are a protected species

My wife is from Illinois a few hours from there. The DNR released wolves into the wild there about 5 years ago, so it's not that shocking that they saw one. Odd that's not mentioned in the article, most are against the reintroduction of them.

He's got to be charged IMO, if not that sets a REALLY bad precedent for other idiots claiming they didn't know what they shot.

Agree KR. Fairly easy to tell difference between o wolf and a yote
If in doubt don't shoot....not that complicated

Link I saw said he will not be charged, which is correct in this case IMHO.
He brought the dead wolf to the DNR office because he wasnt sure.
It was only 70 lbs, which is not unrealistic for a very big Northern coyote.
I believe, as DNR does, that it was an honest mistake. While I understand it possibly sets a bad precedent, it's not like the guy did it knowing it was a wolf and he didnt just let it lay. He brought it to their attention, or they would have never known.
Also anyone who can quickly distinguish a 55 lb coyote from a 70 lb grey wolf please raise your hand.....

charge him with some very relaxing conditions. Public sees a charge, the hunter gets away with a slap.
Everyone wins.
Everyone wins.

Yeah. He's in trouble
Ralphie as Adult: [narrating] It was all over - I was dead. What would it be? The guillotine? Hanging? The chair? The rack? The Chinese water torture? Hmmph. Mere child's play compared to what surely awaited me.
