I have an 8 gal / 120 psi / 5 SCFM (2 hp) compressor that can run 3 framing guns simultaneously all day long. However, It's too bulky & heavy for me to carry around.

I also have a little 3 gal / 100 psi / 1 CFM that just isn't enough for more than 3 shots.

What size should I get?.

Run a framing gun all day? Pretty much any 4 gallon twin-stack compressor will do that easy. Get an Emglo for about $250. Run synthetic compressor oil too. One of the few times Amsoil is worth the money.

Yeah any small pancake or twin stack will probably work just fine. The ones that have wheels and pullout handles work great because you can stack stuff on top and wheel it to where you need to go.

If it's something infrequent then those red Porter Cable pancake compressors will work too. Noisier and will run more frequently but they are tough little machines.

So about the 4 gal range. Thanks man. That's what I needed to know.

Though, I go el-cheap-o a la Harbor Freight.

I got my 8 gallon for $75 (after coupons) and it has lasted me for 5 years. I used the hell out of it. It finally died yesterday.

The Emglo/DeWalt/Rolair Bull/Hitachi all use the exact same motor and pump. All built by an Italian manufacturer so there is no practical difference other than price. They are designed to run hard day-in and day-out too, just use good oil.

One more gallon won't do much without more CFM. Get into the 2.5-3 range and you should be good.
