Even before the Pistons made the bold move of hiring Stan Van Gundy to be their coach and run their basketball operations on Tuesday, there was a growing consensus around the league that whomever was tabbed to replace Joe Dumars in the front office would be willing to let restricted free agent Greg Monroe go.

Now, with Van Gundy in place on an eyebrow-raising contract—five years, $35 million—there is near certainty among league executives that Monroe has played his last game for Detroit.

They tried to say we'd be interested, but it's clearly half hearted speculation.

quote:

Van Gundy’s priority will be to work with Monroe and Falk to find a sign-and-trade deal, allowing Van Gundy to address the big weakness on his team—perimeter shooting, a vital aspect of Van Gundy’s offensive approach. The Pistons shot 32.1 percent from the 3-point line, which was 29th in the league last season.

Multiple league executives said that New Orleans, where Monroe is from, would be on his list, and it is easy to imagine a pairing of Monroe with young star big man Anthony Davis.

Depends on:

1) How much Monroe is going to get; 10 million per...yeah I'd do that. 14-15...nah.

2) What we would have to give up. Eric Gordon? Take him. Ryan Anderson...nah.

It would be interesting to see Monroe and AD paired. Monroe is purely an offensive PF/C, but he does set screens and stuff like that well. Will play no D whatsoever. That would leave AD to be the more defensive of the two. I'm not sure that I want that.

But I would be interested.

I'm not sure we can structure it like that.

But anyway, my point was I wouldn't want to give up the moon and stars in a S&T.

He also rebounds well. I want Asik more, but I would be fine with adding Monroe to the Core 4 instead. But my criteria on how that can happen is pretty similar to yours and I just don't think it's going to happen because of that.

Would Monroe play C?

Or we just have two PFs?

unless it involved unloading Gordon (which I cannot see Detroit being interested in), I would pass.

He would be an upgrade at SG for them and he's solid at shooting the 3(which SVG likes)

For this team, I think a defensive C like Asik is more important.

Assuming we can move gordon, we have a PG, SG, and two PF that make up a bulk of the scoring. I want someone that could hit the boards and score off of offensive boards rather than taking mid range jumpers like Smith.

Obviously they'd be more interested in Gordon if he was given a clean bill of health (lol) and he agreed to opt out (like Mcnamara suggests).

However, I'm sure they'll get significantly better deals.

Can you imagine the smile he would have at his welcoming press conference?

Vincent Ellis: League source: SVG is a big fan of Greg Monroe. Called Monroe last night when deal was final. Ownership group highly fond of Monroe. Twitter @Vincent_Ellis56 - See more at: LINK

I will say that if Detroit is looking for a S&T, 1) Monroe has to agree, so it's not like they could trade with Orlando for Afflalo if Monroe doesn't want to go there. So if the 3 teams listed are the actual ones in play, some package of Gordon for Monroe may not be as unthinkable as it seems. The Lakers have nothing to trade and why would Charlotte want to give up much with Al Jefferson already in place and leading the team to the playoffs? They'd probably offer something like Bismack Biyombo.

So if the choice for Detroit is

Biyombo
Gordon
Nothing

What would they choose? They will have $20-$25 million in cap space, but what will that get them? Last time going all in on a the type of big name FA they were able to attract burned them. Would 1-2 years of Gordon while SVG establishes a team identity be better than overpaying other FAs on 4 year deals?
