At What Tow Weight Do You Move Up To The Next Level Vehicle/Truck?

I know this car/truck can tow this and that, and you have towed 15k with your f150 once, but realistically at what weight do you step up?
Lets say as the levels, stock 1/2 ton, then added items(Trans cooler, Weight Distro Hitch, larger engine, Etc..) to aide, then 3/4 gasser, then 3/4 diesel, 1 ton/ dually.
Assume trips ranging from 1-2 hrs each way to 10-18 hrs each way. Not really concerned about towing 5 miles down to the ramp. What total loaded weight of regular towing do you advance to the next level?

Well for me it would require a class C drivers license.

I'm a wimp. I use a 3/4 ton diesel to pull a 5500# boat.

If I was going to tow anything over 3 hours often (boat, utv, etc.) , I would go with a 3/4 ton at minimuim. Simply for the safety factor.

All depends on the suspension, tranny, etc. on the trucks. Each truck has a different tow rating. Most half tons are good for 6-8k. 3/4 ton you're closer to 9-16k. Over 16k and you're surely going up.

This is the dilemma Im in. Ive been looking for a 3/4 ton for a while now. Currently Im at around 5500 unloaded. add 70 gallons or less gas, plus lots of other stuff and people in the truck and it moves up there. Its become even more obvious with my blown transmission last week. Planning on getting a larger and heavier boat in the near future as well

When you try and stop and your truck just keeps going like you didn't touch the brakes.

3/4 ton if you plan to tow a good bit. Even if you go with 3/4 ton gas over diesel. The 3/4 ton truck is just the better choice. Brakes / Tranny / Rear end / suspension / engine / frame / its all just beefier.
unless you plan to tow 2-3 times a year then the 1/2 ton will work.

All of this.
I have pulled almost 10k with a 1/2 ton. But the suspension and handling makes for an unpleasant ride. Get a 3/4 if you are towing over 8k. Or towing even over 5k regularly. They won't get much worse mileage than a 1/2 ton.
Edit- I have a gas 3/4 and tow 12k no worries. The new gas engines are comparable to diesels of 15 years ago, just not as great of mileage.

That's not a problem load for a 1/2-ton these days.

That might be more related to how you tow rather than what you tow. If you weren't monitoring transmission temps then even a 3/4-ton wouldn't have done you any good.

With my 1/2 ton, I worry more about pin weight than total. I try to stay close to 1,000, and never exceed 1,300.

As long as you have trailer brakes this is the key.

What if I had a Tacoma with painted wheels and extra gas cans?

Does it drive straight or pull to one side...this would make a huge difference in tow capacity

When I tow any distance I leave the display on Trans temp. I range anywhere from 185-200 degrees when towing.

Got you beat at about 3,500#'s

1/2 ton be = 8.5k(longer distance I'd step up)
3/4 ton gas = 15k
3/4 ton diesel = 20k
1 ton = 28k
Every truck should have a transmission cooler. Trailer brakes and tongue weight play a huge part

Thats fair for some half tons, but it's really not correct to put every half ton in the same catagory for this thread. The above quote is what my camper is and the 5.3 chevy wants no more with a the wind drag added to the equation. No way a smaller V8 or 6 would want any part of that.
