How's everyone's crops doing with this influx of rain?
Posted by Seven Costanza on 5/14/14 at 10:07 am00
My cucumber plants are growing an inch or two a day. My tomatoes have taken off. My eggplant and bell peppers finally started to put out some noticeable growth.
My tomatoes' leaves are starting to curl upwards, which I read is an indication of stress like too much water. I'm sure they'll be fine once this storm passes.

I'm pretty sure mine won't come back from the stress. 30 plants down the drain and late in the season to replant.

Mine seem to be doing fine. I made some drainage improvements to my garden after having issues last year. I'll have to check them out later for curling leaves, I guess.

I planted mid-April, which is a month later than I normally plant due to all the rain. I had some great varieties this year too. Mortgage Lifters, Brandywines, German Queens, Cherokee Purples, Golden Jubilee, and Pear Cherries, Also lost 10 Bell Pepper plants. It made me sick to go out there and see all them on death's door. My beans, corn, squash, and eggplants seem to love it though.
I'm trying to decide whether to make a couple raised beds just to get a few plants going.

Mine are all in a raised bed, so I guess it helped prevent them from really hurting with this rain. Some plants that I have in the ground behind the raised bed are dying due to the rain.

I went with mortgage lifters, carolina gold, viva italia, mountain spring, sweet baby girl, german johnson, and cherokee purple.
I screwed up and went from seed on my cherokee purple plants, though, and they just aren't growing worth a shite. My other plants already have good-sized fruit on them, but the cherokee purples look like 2 week old seedlings.

Now you're starting to scare me.

These are from the last week of May last year. This year I don't even have a single tomato plant alive. It has been a crazy year with the long winter and wetness.

My garden is struggling, very few tomato plants that are bearing fruit at all, lots of blossoms so I hope they come through. I was worried that the late winter would mess things up, just hoping to have plenty fruit set before it gets too hot, but looking like we will have a short window

my plants have been struggling, but this rain is certainly helping
although I don't think the cool weather is going to help any...
my okra is still the same size when I planted them 3 weeks ago...
my broccoli is booming though

My cucumber, beans and squash are growing like they are on steroids. My Carolina gold and Cherokee Purple tomatoes bloomed but all the blooms fell off. My gold pear is producing like crazy but it is the only one. Even my Talladega is dropping blooms.
I had a war with aphids that were brought into my garden by me not checking my peppers well enough when I bought them from HomeDepot.
Never never never again.

My tomatoes have been on fire, they're about 1 foot above there cages already with multiple marble to golf ball size green tomatoes on the vine. I gambled and planted in March.
That said, I looked out the window as I was leaving for work and they were all beat down by the rain. The sun should stand them back up though.

Not too good, I only got 4/10 of an inch since my garden has been planted back in March. I want to cuss the weatherman out everytime he gets excited about dry weather. I have cracks in my yard you could lose a pocket knife in.

My tomatoe plants are doing alright. But my cucumbers and squash are growing like crazy and have the flowers blooming so it won't be long.

mine is doing great. I planted late this yr because of all the rain. My corn is slow, its only about 2-3" tall. But my peas, butterbeans, and snap beans are going crazy! my squash already has some on it 3-4" long and cucumbers are blooming as well as my pepper plants, some of the peppers have some on them already.

I have a 3x6 raised bed with tomatoes, peppers and squash. All seem to be doing well and it looks like my tomatoes have grown 3-4 inches since Friday. Yesterday afternoon I saw that some of the blooms had fallen of the tomato plants. They look like healthy blooms, but just fell off. Not all, just a few. Anyone have any idea why?

The blooms fall off when a tomato is about to grow. If you can find the spots where they fell off (look for the green receptacles), you can see if a tomato is growing in it place. There will be a tiny light green bulb in its place.
This is a green receptacle that a bloom recently fell off of:
This is the fertilized ovary which is found within the receptacle and turns into the tomato:
Sometimes you can still see the stigma sticking out.
However, the blooms will also fall off after a certain amount of time if they don't get fertilized. I think the receptacle will fall off too in this case. Don't quote me on that, though.
