8 Valedictorians - good or bad thing?

Northshore High in the 'dell had 8 Valedictorians this year. Same when my kids graduated a few years back. I find this a little ridiculous. I'm assuming everyone had straight A's all four years for this to occur. While it is a big school, and it's great that kids are doing well, I think they are handing out A's too freely if 8 kids make it through 4 years unscathed. They put up good scholarship numbers ($11 million), and the school has put up impressive numbers with National Merit Finalists, but I just find 8 Valedictorians disturbing. I went to Holy Cross in the early 80s, and the teachers there damn sure knew how to challenge us.
I see the same thing happening with grades in my kid's middle school. For example, my kid is in 8th grade honors algebra. This week they have to paint a picture of a stained glass window utilizing certain angles, and it counts as two full test grades. It's an easy bs project to boost grades. Likewise, another class he has routinely hands out irrelevant projects that usually involve crayons, and any kid with a pulse gets an A on these. Sometimes I think he is first grade again. Is "grade boosting" a trend?

Dumb. My school had one valedictorian and one salutatorian (yours truly) and that was it.

I personally believe that the dumb fricker who graduates with the lowest GPA should be showered with scholarships and all the recognition.

Jesuit has a ridiculous amount of valedictorians every year. If they got the same grades all four years in the toughest classes I don't see the harm in having that many.

Horrible idea.
My high school gave out number grades (0-100) just to prevent this from happening. For outside reporting purposes, the grades were converted (94-100 "A", 86-93 "B", etc.), but on your report card you got a number. We had one valedictorian and one salutatorian. And, they were the two smartest kids in the class and deserved the honor.

I had about that many when I graduated as well. School had about 500-600 kids per year though. That was over 15 years ago.
They try to make it harder for there to be that many by using higher GPA numbers for AP classes, so the kids who don't take AP don't even have a shot at it. There is only so much you can do if all the smart kids all take the same amount of AP classes and all get A's.

My school would only allow one Valedictorian so they started using weighted classes, standardized testing, and ACT scores to narrow it down until the runner-up one year got mad and sued the school.
Now there's no Valedictorian.
Now there's no Valedictorian.

Did they have an 8 way tie or something? I thought by definition the valedictorian was the student that ranked #1 in that class.

pretty much this
kids are getting smarter. people just refuse to admit it. Flynn Effect...science, bitch
for all this talk about easy classes, this doesn't explain the sharp jump in AP classes the past 15 years

In my case, it was a multiple way tie. Every kid got straight A's and took the same amount of AP classes to get the higher weighted GPA.

if 8 kids took every AP class and made straight As their entire career, they'd all rank #1
