Back in January X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner expressed an interest in casting Channing Tatum as Gambit in a proposed standalone movie, then in April the 21 Jump Street star said that he’d love to play the character. And now it seems a deal has been done, with Donner confirming the news last night.

“It is Channing” Donner told TotalFilm on the X-Men: Days of Future Past red carpet in London. “He’s a rogue, Channing, he’s a rascal, like Remy LaBeau, and he can handle the action, we all know that.”

Donner added that the fact he’s a southerner and knows that world makes him the perfect person to play the part.

I think i've hit my saturation point. I have no interest in batman vs superman (seriously i almost feel like this movie is a joke and its not really happening). I dont think i'll catch this one either, certainly not in the theater. Had no interest in the captain americas. Surely its gotta be getting close for the rest of america as well regarding their saturation point.

A Gambit standalone movie won't work, at least not right now. He needs to have a major role in the next X-Men movie first.

They need to introduce him first. Too far removed from the cartoon to get kids excited about Gambit.

Correct. In fact, most X-Men can't carry a standalone movie. That's just how it is.

Tatum is fine. and X-men movie is fine. A stand-alone Gambit movie? There's only one storyline you could do and it wouldn't make any sense without some background.

Meh. Love Gambit and have recently come to appreciate Tatum but I'm not sold on this casting choice.

I read the headline, and was like, "damn, that's a solid choice."

If only there was a way to get background into a movie...

I think Gambit needs to have a nola accent. I think it's imperative that they get that right.

I have seen the future and the fall of comic movies will come from Fox and Sony trying to squeeze too much out of X-Men and Spiderman.

They'll drive the properties into the ground before Marvel ever gets them back.

I wish they just wouldn't give him much of an accent, seems like something they'd just mess up.

Eta...he's from Nola, not a Cajun area. He shouldn't really have that much of an accent. But I'm sure they'll still work in 1. No A/C in the city 2. Voodoo to some degree, and 3. A jazz funeral/second line into the movie somewhere.

And they'll massacre the accent.
