Etiquette for turning down job after accepting?

So I accepted a job last week with another company. I put in 2 weeks notice at my current company and the HR manager called me into his office and made a very compelling counteroffer. Any advice on telling the other company that I'll be backing out of their offer?

Say "sorry, my current job offered me a better deal. Thank you for the consideration, but I am going to be staying with them"

I have only done it with internships but I just call them up, thank them for the opportunity, and say that unfortunately another option has come up that is best for me/my family. You don't wanna burn bridges and what not and usually I have been told (and it's been my experience) that they understand.
If that doesn't work then so be it. Gotta do what's best for you and in time they should understand I guess. But then again I am young and dumb.

If you can go talk to the person that hired you in person and explain. I did this one time and I was extremely nervous about it but it was worth it in the end.

I had to do it last summer. I called the guy who would have been my boss and told him. I was very nervous and figured I was burning the bridge but I wanted to tell him and not email.

Fwiw, don't think they would cut you just as fast. It's business. Do what's best for your family.

HR people understand there is competition for the best employees. Will not surprise them you got a counter offer and decided to stay. Just be professional and thank them for extending you the offer.

I would never accept a counter offer. I just went through this two weeks ago. There was a reason I started looking and more money wouldn't make me stay. I told them not to even try to counter and they did anyway. I know plenty that have regretted taking that counter

You are definitely not the first person to accept a counter offer... just tell them straight. It's not like you will be removing a huge cog of their operation by 'leaving'. They'll survive.

I read an article not long ago that said you should never accept a counter offer once you give notice. It shows disloyalty to both companies, and eventually you'll be out 2 jobs. I'll try to find it.
