Got a surprise today. Going to close on my house and I find out that recently a debt of $180 for a medical bill when my son broke his leg two years ago is dinging my credit. I never received a bill for this. I received several bills for X-rays, doctor visits, ortho charges, etc and paid all of them. (I pay my bills) But I never received this bill.

I called the debt collector and they refuse to remove the hit to my credit even if I agree to pay the balance immediately, I called my insurance and it is a legitimate charge. I simply never received a bill. I have confirmed my address is correct with the debt collector. They claim they sent me ONE letter back in January notifying me of the collection but obviously I never got that otherwise I'd have paid it.

I'm not sure what else to do, this is pissing me off because it's affecting my interest rate on the home loan and I KNOW I didn't get this bill. Of course the debt collector thinks I'm feeding them a line of bullshite.

Do I have any options here? Dispute the claim with the credit unions? Bitch and moan and suck it up? It's not really the extra $$ on the interest rate because it's not that much. It's the principal. I take pride in keeping my credit score high and this pisses me off.

Honestly, a few months of a couple hundred dollars should not effect your credit score that much....

Loan underwriters and brokers use a range to get the interest rate. No way a couple hundred dollars scorned your credit score enough to effect the loan, unless you went from like a 741 to a 739 or something.

Long story short, unless you have an invalid claim that has been detrimental for months/years on your credit, it's pointless to dispute

Well let me clarify. It didn't hit my credit much. It's my wife's. She has almost no credit. So it dropped her score about 80 points.

Go to the original creditor and talk to them about having it removed.

If that doesn't work send a certified letter to the collection agency or at least get beyond the collector level at the agency, offering a pay for delete. If they don't accept that screw them. A collection derog on your report hurts your score the same if its open or settled or paid. If its a few years old its even better to have it collect dust rather than report a new date of last payment. If they call then ask them to file for judgment. If they don't then send a letter to cease and desist so they stop calling you until it hits the SOL. How much is the bill for?

You can try.. But not sure what Neighbors or Pentagon or the like would do.

The worst thing you can do on 2 year old debt is bring it current even if to mark as paid. The DOLP becomes <1 year and that will typically reset the clock on that collection derog. Her score will drop further.

I'd pay it and get a receipt. When you go to file the dispute (definitely do this) you can upload files along with your dispute. Upload the receipt and also write an explanation of what happened. The fact that you handled it immediately after finding the problem will help.

The balance is $140. I called the original creditor this morning and talked with them for a while. She told me I could pay them directly. Then she informed me that I had a $40 credit sitting there due to overpayment on another bill from the same company! I was like WTF you sending my shite to a creditor while I have a credit just sitting there!? Pissed me off even further.

Anyway I paid the remaining balance with the original billing company and they will notify the debt collector that the balance has been paid and are sending me something confirming this in 2 business days.

What are my options now? I need this off my credit in 30 days or less. Is this possible?

Nothing. You already fricked this up by paying it

I don't get how it's possible I messed it up by paying it, how backwards is that?

I never disputed the charge. I know the charge is valid. My dispute is that I was never notified of the bill. Ever. Until yesterday I didn't know it existed.

Any chance you had of them deleting it probably went away when you paid the original creditor. You could have held out for a "pay for delete" with the collection agency but now they have absolutely no reason to delete it. You can call and beg and write goodwill letters but that's really your only option. If you dispute it, they will provide documentation showing you had a bill and didn't pay it. I had a similar situation with an old AT&T bill that was sent to an old address that I know I never received. I ended up doing what you did and paid AT&T as soon as I found out about it because they said they would have it removed from my credit report. I had to call the collection agency several times and they finally deleted it. Good luck.

See that's the problem. I don't have the luxury of holding out for "pay for delete" I need this cleaned up asap.

You pissed away your only bargaining chip and went with the "I paid you, can you pretty please fix my stuff?". You want a company to act accordingly, then contact the credit agencies (all 3) and then make sure the credit agencies do their job. And you want it done in 30 days. It ain't happening.

And that right there is what is pissing me off.

Through no fault of my own, I'm going to suffer for this. I refuse to believe that the credit agencies/debt collectors/etc can't make this right within 30 days.

It would be up to the company to report it to the credit agencies and they usually do that once a month at the most. I just think you are dreaming if you think this will get done in 30 days. I say close on the house and then refi later when it gets cleaned up.

That's the plan if this fails. just sucks I'll have to pay closing costs again.

If you do it with the company that you have your current (or soon to be current) mortgage with, sometimes they are very reasonable and can do it for minimal costs.

Yes, I get that. I fricked it up. Not sure why I keep being told repeatedly that it was a dumb move. Besides, the charge was valid. Why not pay it? The dispute was never about the charge, it was about the lack of notification that I even had this bill.
