Compensatory picks nfl bias?

its definitely an intriguing thought when you have 2 players hit free agency. 1 was cut and the other's contract just ran out. Sign the one that was cut and it doesn't affect your compensatory pick compensation. definitely something that should kept in mind.

I really have no clue what the formula is. All I can say is that we don't sit on our hands in free agency, and it's been the reason why we haven't gotten them.

I forget who, but someone in the media gets the compensatory pick formula right every year. If they are indeed following a formula, then there is no bias. I do think there is an argument that the current formula is in need of a revamp though. To me, given the current measurable, the Saints method of addressing free agency head-on is much preferred than relying on the draft anyway.

This.
We also seem to try to trade players for picks before free agency. (ie Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles) I kind of consider those our compensatory picks.

Past couple of years, I think its the fact we lose players, but we also sign big names to offset the loss.
Nicks -> Grubbs (nicks gets injured)
Bushrod -> Lewis (starter for starter)
Ellis -> didn't stick
Could be wrong though

There is no bias. It's somewhat complex formula based on variables such as contract signed, playing time, age, etc. The only potential for bias comes in the fact that the formula is secret but it's been basically deciphered by a few people.
The Saints have gotten better or comparable players that last few years in free agency and thus haven't gotten compensatory picks. We likely won't get one next year either.

It is an antiquated system that should go away. Why reward teams who make a conscious decision not to sign their own free agents?

The first part of the system (determining if you even get a pick and how many) is super easy.
If you sign the same or more UFAs (not counting cut players or RFAs that didn't get tendered) than teams sign from your eligible pool, you get zero picks.
If you sign less you get 1 pick for every player less(to a point, maybe 5 max?).
That's the easy part and why we never get them. It's our plan to do it that way as we prefer the known over the unknown.
So if you want to get mad about it, blame Payton and Loomis.
Now the trickier part is determining round. But being we never shoot for them we don't have to worry about that.

I agree.
If the NFL wasn't correctly following a formula, I would think someone in the organization would leak that to one the "crack" reporters covering the team.
