Cooks is NOT a Running Back

I keep seeing many say that Cooks is replacing Sproles and will do what Sproles did. Guys, here is a little info for you: Cooks is a Wide Receiver, whereas Sproles is a Running Back. These are two different positions. The similarities will pertain to the setups in which Sproles was lined up as a WR and they will stop there.
For a more accurate description of how we will use Cooks' versatility in this offense, see P. Harvin ala Minn.

Shhhhhh, don't tell anybody! We are setting up for when his contract date comes up in a few years and we can save money calling him a RB instead of WR.

I've stated before that Payton is looking to replace Sproles production with a WR. Another way to say it is we're moving away from small ball and trimming down the RB involvement in the passing game. Sproles wasn't really involved much in running the ball anyway.

Exactly. We're also changing the nature of our running game.

I agree with everything you said, but Harvin did line up at running back at times in Minn. Same with Sea.
Nonetheless, Cooks won't be in our backfield unless he's getting an end around.

The need to label him as either a Sproles or a Moore replacement is no les short of a retarded way of thinking.

He's a player with his own dynamics. His play may seem similar to that of Sproles and Moore at times, but he has his own skill set and I can't wait to see how CSP utilizes him

By taking sproles role I assume most are referring to sproles' role in the short passing game, which is correct

Shall we set an over/under amount of carries for the season?

Maybe sometimes but if you aren't taking advantage of Cooks speed getting him vertical and down the seams, you are really doing the offense an injustice. He's not sproles, he's not moore. He may replace them with merely touches but the ways he will produce and used are not that comparable imo.

I think what people are saying is that he will fill the role of that short pass catcher who is exposlive and dynamic and a threat to run for a touchdown if in the open field.
I would expect to see him running some WR screens and end arounds. Besides that, I would expect some short to intermediary routes. Pretty much what Sproles was running out of the backfield and what Bush was running when he motioned out of the backfield.

But yall used a 1st and 3rd to get him.
2 picks means he plays 2 positions, right?

I think payton felt "figured out" last season and is marred by it. Hes going to restructure our fundamentals on offfense like is being touched on in this thread. Less predictability from the RB position in the passing game, more solid in run game, more production from the WR in the passing game and like was said, less small ball. We will see.

I've said something along those lines, so I guess I can clarify from that end. Whenever I've said it, I've always meant more replacing the bubble screens, the quick LOS throws, and whatnot. Not specifically anything out of the backfield.

I don't believe this. Cooks is a WR. He will do what WRs do. Split out...slot, etc. He'll play all WR positions looking for matchups. Also, he'll be able to go over the top of the D. I wouldn't count on him lining up in the backfield unless its solely to cause a matchup problem...maybe by motioning out to the slot or something.
Either way, he isn't a Sproles replacement, just another weapon.
