Lockheed Martin promises bus-size nuclear fusion plant by 2017

Charles Chase describes what his team has been working on: a trailer-sized fusion power plant that turns cheap and plentiful hydrogen (deuterium and tritium) into helium plus enough energy to power a small city.
ALL the world's energy needs solved by nuclear fusion by 2045.

Now, this might sound like great news and, for the most part, it is. No more dirty reliance on fossil fuels. But the political implications are as enormous as the energy ones. What, for example, will happen to the world's balance of power when millions of Middle Easterners, Iranians, Venezuelans, and Russians are deprived of the backbones of their economies? Massive poverty breeds massive contempt which in turn breeds terrorism.
I read a National Geographic cover article a few years ago whose topic was Saudi Arabia. If I recall correctly, theirs is a VERY college educated society (among males, that is) but something on the order of 90% of their college students attend for Muslim studies, not for any sciences. The oil kingdoms have done an extremely poor job of converting their large revenue streams into permanent technological and infrastructure improvements.
This world might be in for a world of hurt... but we're going to be able to power it.

Well, they would get nearly unlimited energy to pursue whatever other industries they'd like, so it doesn't sound like a terrible tradeoff to me.

Finally an alternative energy that might work

Unfortunately, when the oil spigot is turned off, they won't have the money for terrorism on a global scale, which means they can get on their camels and ride back into the desert where they belong.

Until Lockheed Martin figures out a way to better power cars and manufacture plastics and other petroleum based products, the ME will be OK.
Also I think, for now, thorium based reactors are probably a more viable solution in the short term.

Are we believing this promise because of respect for Lockheed Martin?
Is fusion the prize on the horizon that never comes true?
Is Doc Oc of Spiderman 2 the lead engineer?

No, even worse, Keanu Reeves.

A lot of seemingly intractable technological problems can be solved if you throw enough electricity at them.
ETA, like powering vehicles via electromagnets embedded in the roadway. That would be feasible with fusion.

Perhaps, but the time it would take for infrastructure development (provided this program could actually be operable in the next 3 years, which is very highly unlikely) would take decades, not to mention the cost. I don't think the oil sheiks will be running for the hills anytime soon.

It also becomes easy and cost effective to cook shale oil out of rock in situ with limitless electricity.

Kudos. This is far and away the greatest thing you've ever posted.
Amazing!

The Lockheed Skunk Works built the U2 and SR71. They have a pretty impressive track record.
